Harbour, Route and Townscape

Those who want to discover Nyborg through its harbour and urban history will find a notable starting point in the 21.7-kilometre route “Mellem fjord og bælt”. It begins at Nyborg Harbour, just a few steps from the town centre with its castle, church, cafés and charming shopping streets. The designated cycling routes in Nyborg pass through coastal and woodland landscapes as well as the atmosphere of a charming trading town. This combines views of the landscape with a townscape where historic buildings and everyday life exist close together. The distance is a clear planning factor when the harbour, landscape and nearby town centre are included in the excursion.

Castle and Constitutional History

Nyborg Castle was built around 1200 by Valdemar Sejr. In the Danehof Hall at Nyborg Castle, the historic room where the king met with his parliament in the Middle Ages, Denmark’s first constitution was signed. The castle is undergoing extensive restoration; no date has yet been set for its reopening. This current status is part of understanding the site when visiting Nyborg with an interest in its medieval history.

Church, Water Tower and Bastion

The Church of Our Lady (Nyborg Church) was built by Queen Margaret I between 1388 and 1428 and consecrated to the Virgin Mary on Whitsun Day 1428. Another defining building is Nyborg Water Tower, dating from 1899 and standing as a listed building on Dronningens Bastion. The water tower offers a climb to the top with views over the historic Nyborg Ramparts.

Renaissance and Engaging Interpretation

Borgmestergården in Nyborg is a well-preserved Renaissance merchant’s house with a local history collection. During a visit, guests can see an exhibition about the Lerche family, the alchemist’s room and the old smithy, as well as try writing with a quill and ink. A free castle walk at Nyborg Castle lasts about an hour and begins at Borgmestergården. Here, merchant history, historic rooms and a hands-on experience centred around the castle come together. From the same starting point, the merchant’s house and the approximately one-hour castle walk can therefore be combined.

School History and Flavours at the Harbour

The Skolemuseet in Nyborg is an authentic school museum with one of Denmark’s largest collections from the old schools of Nyborg and the surrounding area. Nyborg Distillery offers another way to explore the town’s history: whisky, gin and rum are produced in the former workshops of the Danish State Railways at Nyborg Harbour. Nyborg Distillery also includes an organic restaurant, a café and a shop selling the distillery’s own organic products.
