Slude: Beach, Trails and Local History

At Slude Beach, the coast reveals itself in a tangible, nature-oriented form: The beach is narrow, and stones can be collected here. At the same time, Slude combines trail experiences with a remarkable landscape and local history. If you are looking for a place for your trip where coast, activity and historical traces can be brought together, Slude offers several different starting points for planning.

Beach and Marked Trails

On its section from Hesselagergård to Nyborg, the long-distance hiking trail E6 runs via Slude Beach. This section follows marked Cycle Route 50. This allows you, when planning your trip, to distinguish between a hike on the E6 and following Cycle Route 50, without treating the two routes as separate local histories. For active days, it is advisable to take the precise route of this section into account before choosing your accommodation.

Another clearly described coastal route is the coastal strategy route F2.02.02. It begins at Slude Beach and ends at the boundary with section F2.03 at Kløverhage. The route is 2.6 km long and is located in Nyborg Municipality. Anyone wishing to include a short, clearly defined coastal stage in their plans can use this length as a fixed reference point.

Landscape and Archaeological Traces

In addition to the beach, the landscape near Sludegård is worth exploring. There, Sludegårds Sømose widens to almost 300 m. The landscape is also connected with a long prehistory: Offerings were repeatedly made in Sludegård Sømose over a period of 2,000 years.

Archaeological finds in Sludegårds Sømose include clay vessels, wooden and flint tools, as well as remains of animals and humans. In 1946, a human skull and a worked piece of wood, presumably the handle of an axe, were found there during peat extraction.

A Place with a Documented History

Slude is first mentioned in written sources in 1323 under the name “Sluthæ”. An early land consolidation map from 1810 depicts Slude as a village with three farms, as well as Sludegård. The local history also includes the station in Slude, which served as a base for processing mail and dispatching goods directly throughout the country.

The place name itself also offers an interesting historical perspective. “Slude” could refer to the surrounding hilly landscape and can be understood as “lean forward” or “bend”. This interpretation remains a possibility, but it fits with the traditional connection between the name and the landscape.
