Bollnäs in Hälsingland offers a trip between urban history, culture and paths by the water. When choosing accommodation, it makes a difference whether you plan to visit museums and events in the centre, spend time on the Långnäs peninsula or take trips to the sports facilities. The town lies in inland Sweden; staying here does not mean staying directly on the Baltic coast. So compare the actual address with the places you want to visit rather than assuming a coastal location from the name of the travel portal.

Church, museum and the Iron Age

Bollnäs Church was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Its extensive collection of medieval church sculptures is surpassed in Sweden only by that of Vadstena Abbey Church. Those interested in older architectural and art history will find a different focus here than at Bollnäs Museum & Art Gallery. The museum tells the story of the town; the art gallery hosts changing exhibitions. The exhibition “Bollnäsbarnen” looks at the lives of children and young people in the town around 1900. For a multi-generational stay, these different perspectives can fill a dedicated museum day, without assuming any particular current exhibition programme.

On Onbacken hill, information boards guide you on a walk through the Iron Age. From there, you can see Varpen and the Ljusnan. This makes it a counterpoint to the interiors of the church and museum: history can also be read in the landscape. If you want to visit several of these places, accommodation with convenient connections to the centre and Onbacken may be a good choice. A hotel’s name alone tells you nothing about the walking distance.

Culture and time at Långnäs

Kulturkvarteret Bollnäs offers a programme of music, dance, art and other cultural experiences. Kulturhuset is right in the centre; parking spaces and accessible parking spaces are directly in front. Tickets can be purchased at its reception. For a specific evening, however, check the event and your route back to your accommodation for the date you plan to go.

Folkets Park on Långnäs udde dates back to the 1920s. Events featuring local and visiting artists take place there in summer. The peninsula is also home to Långnäs, a centrally located swimming area with a sandy beach and large lawns. The pier in the marina is the departure point for trips on the S/S Warpen. These places make Långnäs a destination in its own right: swimming, the park programme and boat trips have different schedules and requirements, even though they are all located on the same peninsula. Check whether a trip is running before planning your day around it.

Sports and choosing suitable accommodation

Bollebacken has five ski runs and three lifts, as well as a fun park with jumps, rails and a big jump. This specific facility is distinct from the summer swimming and cultural destinations; its infrastructure does not guarantee that the slopes will be open or conditions suitable on the day of your trip. If sport is your priority, compare the actual connection from your accommodation to Bollebacken. For a cultural stay, the centre and Långnäs may be more important. Choose a holiday home, holiday apartment or hotel based on its confirmed location and booking conditions, not on unsubstantiated last-minute or price promises.
