Hassela offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: church and farm history, archaeological traces, and hiking trails and nature in the surrounding area. The historic sites and described routes offer different perspectives on the region, while recreational activities and bus connections add practical considerations.

Church, farm history, and archaeological traces

Hassela Church was built between 1823 and 1826 in the Karl Johan style. Inside, Gunnar Torhamn’s monumental altarpiece defines the space. A much older landmark is the ruins of Hassela’s old church, dating from the 12th century, which are part of Hassela Local Heritage Farm. Hassela is therefore home to traces from different centuries: the medieval church ruins and the early 19th-century church tell different chapters of local history.

Hassela burial ground also reaches far back in time: it comprises seven burial mounds from the Late Iron Age, dated to 400–550 AD. It is situated on a hill with a view over the water. Signs from the local heritage farm point to the burial ground; a simple path leads over old farmland into the wooded area with the graves. As the path conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

Another historic highlight is Ersk-Matsgården. The farmstead is considered the best-preserved and most complete of its kind in Gävleborg County. Together with the churches and burial ground, it offers a different way to explore the region’s past than archaeological traces alone.

Hiking and nature in the surrounding area

In the area around Hassela, Ånäset is a distinctive landscape feature: this approximately 1.3-kilometre-long, pine-dominated wooded esker is a scenic promontory in the northwestern part of Lake Hassela. At Ånäset, visitors can walk along a path by the water and take in open areas rich in flowers. Here, the focus is on views of the water, woodland, and open landscape.

Another hiking option is the Ånäsetrundan, a 3.4-kilometre route in Hassela. The Vallstigen is considerably longer: the trail is 59 kilometres in total and runs from Hassela in the west to the harbour at Norrfjärden in the east. The lengths of the two routes help you gauge the different hiking distances. Some sections of the Vallstigen need better marking and may be passable only with difficulty or to a limited extent; take this information into account when planning.

The Gulliksberget Nature Reserve is also in the surrounding area, about 15 kilometres northwest of Hassela. Visitors can move freely there through a fire-affected pine forest, without being restricted to paths. As access conditions may change, check the latest information before your visit.

Leisure activities and getting there

Hassela Adventure Land has three heated outdoor pools: a 25-metre pool, a 12-metre pool, and a small paddling pool. Other attractions include pedal car tracks, a bouncy castle, playhouses, a sandbox, and an area for nature-based play. As opening times are seasonal and may change, check whether the facilities are open before visiting.

Golf enthusiasts will find an 18-hole course at Hasselabygdens Golf Club, with varied woodland and parkland holes as well as water features. Check the course details before your trip. Hassela also has bus connections to Bergsjö and Hudiksvall; check the services before travelling. This allows nature, history, and leisure activities to be considered as different focuses for a stay, without requiring the same type of outing or activity to take centre stage.
