Along the Halland coast, visitors choosing between maritime history and nature watching will find two distinct highlights in Galtabäck: the harbour atmosphere, with its boat museum and maritime history, and the nearby open coastal landscape. When deciding where to stay, it is therefore worth considering whether harbour and fishing history or the coast and birdlife should play a greater part in your trip.

Harbour atmosphere and boat museum

Galtabäcks hamn is one of the most authentic harbour settings on the Halland coast. Well-preserved fishing huts, warehouses, boat jetties and navigation markers shape the harbour scene; there is also a lifeboat station dating from the early 20th century. The Båtmuseet is located in Galtabäcks hamn and displays the preserved keel of the Galtabäcksskeppet. The harbour’s architectural character and a tangible piece of maritime history can thus be seen side by side.

In the “Fisket i Halland” section, the museum explores historical fishing through handlines, haddock longlines, fish traps and set nets. The thematic focus therefore goes beyond the individual ship part: while the preserved keel is a specific object, the four methods listed bring fishing itself to the fore. Galtabäck’s modern harbour facility lies south of Lerjan and was established in the 19th century.

Ship finds and reconstruction

The Galtabäcksskeppet is dated to 1195; two medieval ships were found in the bay between Galtabäck and Gamla Köpstad in 1928. The dates refer to different things: 1195 is the dating of the ship, while 1928 is the year it was found. Galten is a reconstruction based on interpretations of this find.

Members of the Galtabäcksskeppet building group work together to maintain the boats. The maritime theme thus extends from preserved artefacts and historical fishing to the community upkeep of boats.

Coast and birdlife

Near Galtabäck lies Gamla Köpstad Södra, an open coastal landscape with coastal meadows, heathland and shingle fields. The nature reserve offers a different perspective on the coast from the harbour setting: here, open landscape features define its natural character.

Many migratory birds, especially waders and ducks, rest in the shallow marine bay of Lerjan. At the southern end of the Gamla Köpstad Södra nature reserve, a birdwatching tower offers views of the birdlife in the Lerjan lagoon area. This means there are two distinct nature experiences nearby: the open coastal landscape and birdwatching around the lagoon.

Trails, access and bathing spot

The nature reserve has easy-to-walk trails. Galtabäckshamn is designated as an access point to the southern part; there are also several gravel car parks in the reserve. Check the current parking situation before your visit, as parking arrangements may change.

Galtabäcks hamn also has a bathing spot. If you are considering a trip for swimming, you can treat it as a separate coastal highlight alongside the harbour setting and nature reserve. Check the current situation before your visit, as conditions and facilities may change.
