Tvååker: Churches and the Viking Age Burial Ground
Accommodation in Tvååker
Tvååker offers travellers several distinct ways to explore history and nature: the old and present-day churches, a Viking Age burial ground, and the Lille-Bengts local heritage farm. When planning your trip, it helps to keep these topics separate: the churches tell a story of construction spanning several centuries, while archaeological finds take centre stage at the burial ground. If you’d like to include some exercise, you can also compare two hiking trails in the Åkulla Beech Forests based on their characteristics.
Churches built in several phases
The old church in Tvååker was built around the year 1200. Its tower was built in 1688; the church was extended that same year. The present-day church was built in 1853 to plans by the architect Johan Fredrik Åbom. This gives us three historical milestones: the early church building, the extension and tower construction in 1688, and the construction of the present-day church. Anyone interested in architecture can read these dates as a chronological sequence, distinguishing the older church from the present-day building.
The burial ground and the farm’s history
Remains of 139 graves have been found at the Viking Age burial ground in Tvååker. Investigations also uncovered animal and human bones. Archaeologists also found three large stone ship settings and a ship-shaped mound there. These different finds give the burial ground several concrete points of interest: the number of graves, bone finds, and ship-shaped structures.
Tvååker’s local heritage farm is called Lille-Bengts. Olof and Alma Andersson were its last owners and lived there from 1923 to 1981; after that, the farm was donated to the Tvååker local heritage association. A film tells the story of the farm and includes a narration by Roland, a nephew of Olof. This personal account complements the information about the farm’s history and sets it apart from the archaeological finds and the churches’ building history.
Oaks and hiking trails
A municipal overview, updated on 16 July 2025, lists ten natural monuments in Varberg Municipality; all are oak trees. The locations listed include Tvååker and Lindberg, as well as a place just north of Galtabäck.
In the Åkulla Beech Forests, the Skogsbostigen is considered the more challenging hiking trail and offers beautiful views of Hiaklitten. The Älvasjöstigen is considered somewhat easier and is suitable for pushchairs. The comparison therefore sets the views and greater challenge of the Skogsbostigen against the Älvasjöstigen’s somewhat easier, pushchair-friendly character.
Garden and practical information
Eriksgård in Tvååker has a large garden area for strolling and relaxing, as well as several seating areas. If you’d like to combine exercise with a break, you can include this in your excursion plans. The Tvååkers IF supporters’ club flea market is on the way to Övrevi, the club’s sports ground.
