Steninge presents beaches, nature and history as distinct themes to consider when planning a trip. At Steninge havsbad, you can swim at a sandy beach. Fågelholmarna and the Steninge naturreservat, Hulabäck nature reserve offer further specific points of interest in the coastal and woodland landscape; Steninge kyrka and the history of stone quarrying and glassmaking add a historical perspective. This lets you decide whether beach time, natural features or cultural history should take center stage during your stay.

Coast and nature

Fågelholmarna are rocky islets about a hundred meters offshore from the beach in the northern part of Steningekusten. Their location and shape make them a specific natural attraction alongside the sandy beach. Another aspect of the landscape is the Steninge naturreservat, Hulabäck nature reserve: the area is a mixed forest dominated by deciduous trees in hilly terrain. At least part of it is considered an older sand dune that has become overgrown with forest. This makes it possible to explore the open coastal landscape and the wooded, hilly terrain as distinct nature interests.

Sandy beach and coastal activities

Swimming is possible at the sandy beach at Steninge havsbad. You can fish for small crabs from the pier to Stora Skär. These activities offer different experiences: swimming centers on the sandy beach, while crab fishing involves searching along the stretch from the pier to Stora Skär. Seasonal conditions for beach and coastal activities may vary; check local conditions before your visit.

In the wider area around Steninge, you can use a gravel path in the northern part of the Steningekusten nature reserve with a wheelchair or stroller. This information applies to that section of the path. If this option is important for your plans, check local conditions before your visit.

Church and architectural history

Steninge kyrka was probably built sometime in the 13th century. The original church had no tower; until 1679, a free-standing wooden bell tower stood east of the church. A major renovation in 1932 gave Steninge kyrka its present appearance. If you are interested in architectural history, you can consider these three dates separately: the presumed origin, the earlier arrangement with a free-standing bell tower, and the renovation that shaped its present appearance. This historical context covers more than the church’s estimated age: it also shows how its architectural form changed.

Stone quarrying and glassworks

The history of local industries also helps explain Steninge beyond its individual buildings. Toward the end of the 19th century, the area around Steninge was shaped by stone quarrying. The veined gneiss quarried nearby was transported away and used as paving stone. During the same period as the quarrying, a glassworks operated between the sand dunes and Steninge’s coastal road. These two activities tell different sides of the story of that era: stone was extracted and put to use, while the glassworks represented another industry. Together, they offer a historical perspective on work and materials that complements the beach and nature themes.
