Gerlev Among Roses, Nature and History

If you choose Gerlev for a trip focused on observing nature and exploring local history, you will find two strong points of interest here. At the centre is Gerlevparken: it is a 10-hectare park and natural area. The park is privately owned and open to the public during the day from sunrise to sunset. This allows you to plan your day around the park and nature theme while also keeping the cultural and landscape features of Gerlev in view.

To reach Gerlevparken, the park has an access road from Lyngerupvej and good parking facilities by the garden. Access and parking therefore form a separate practical aspect, while nature and cultural experiences broaden the content of your visit.

Park, Plants and Protected Areas

Gerlevparken includes Den Danske Træsamling, with trees and shrubs that migrated naturally to Denmark after the last Ice Age. At Gerlev Strandpark, the habitat area with nutrient-rich fen and spring meadow has been extended slightly. At Gerlev Strandpark, the protected areas down to the Roskilde Fjord belong to the landowners' association. These different aspects of nature open up several perspectives: plant communities, special wetland habitats, and protected areas along the Roskilde Fjord each represent a distinct aspect of the local landscape.

Roses and Guided Tours

Gerlevparken is home to around 5,500 rose plants, including approximately 3,000 old, fragrant varieties. Rose tours can be organised by arrangement with Gerlevparkens Venner. The garden theme therefore appeals both to visitors who want to observe plant diversity and to travellers seeking a guided insight into the roses.

Church and Inn

Gerlev's local history is also made tangible through two specific places. The current altarpiece in Gerlev Church dates from 1631 and was created by Hans Bachmann in Kratmøllen. Gerlev Kro is a red-rendered half-timbered building from the 19th century. Gerlev Kro first became an inn in 1967. The building also housed a meeting house, a café, and a confectionery. The church and the inn thus offer two different historical points of interest: a sacred artwork and a building with several former uses.

The Fjordstien and Active Travel Ideas

For active travel interests, the Fjordstien complements the nature and cultural themes. The Frederikssund–Skibby section of the Fjordstien is classified as moderately difficult. Gerlev Landsby belongs to the Frederikssund–Skibby section of the Fjordstien. This adds a hiking theme to your travel planning alongside the park, garden, and local history, without allowing any single activity to define Gerlev's character.
