Farum: Farum Lake, Hiking Trails and Architecture
Farum Lake and the Farum Forests
If you are weighing up nature, trails and culture together for a trip, Farum offers several clearly distinct points of interest. The Farum Forests have three marked hiking trails. Particularly specific is the 6.5 km Terkelskov and Nyvang hiking trail: it leads through hilly terrain with forest lakes, the Fileten Arboretum and Ravnehullet. When planning a walk, both the fixed distance and the hilly terrain should be taken into account. The three marked trails and the specific route through Terkelskov and Nyvang therefore provide two different levels of information for planning a walk.
Water, Birdlife and Trail Details
Farum Lake is home to a diverse bird population, including goldeneye and goosander. Doktorens Bugt, the smallest bathing area in Furesø Municipality on Farum Lake, is located by the lake. Along the Farum Lake Path, 11 stones at the full-kilometre markers feature reliefs of animals or plants typical of the area. These details give walks and nature observations a clear local connection without reducing the landscape to a single experience.
Architecture by Farum Lake
Farum also offers various architectural perspectives. Stavnsholt Church was completed and ready for its inauguration on 23 August 1981. Its interior has an almost square floor plan and a cube-shaped space with bevelled corners. Johan Otto von Spreckelsen won the architectural competition for the church. Farumgaard has a preserved Baroque garden and is located directly on Farum Lake. In October 2023, public access through Farumgaard Park was restored via a path along the eastern side of the Baroque garden.
Village History and Local Insights
In Farum Village, the Rytterskolen school was built by Frederik IV in 1726. Madam Schieves Hus was built as a bourgeois residence in 1755. Cornelen in Stavnsholt offers a different historical perspective: it recreates a typical rural farm shop from the 1930s, and coffee and tea are sold in the café. The local history thus ranges from older buildings to a vivid depiction of rural everyday life.
Museums and Modern Residential Architecture
Farum Kulturhus has five galleries and a children's gallery. Exhibitions by local, national and international artists can be viewed there. The Immigrant Museum covers 500 years of Danish immigration history. Farum Midtpunkt provides a modern architectural contrast: the complex was built from 1972 to 1975 as one of the most experimental housing developments of its time. Its architecture combines the privacy of a single-family home with an external sense of community.
When looking for accommodation in Farum, you can therefore first decide whether your main interests lie more around Farum Lake and in the forests or in architecture, local history and museums. If you would also like to compare other destinations at the same level, Værløse can help you find your bearings.
