Gedesby between the Baltic Sea beach and history

Gedesby Beach is a good, child-friendly bathing beach. Here on the Baltic Sea, the coastal experience takes center stage: swimming and the beach can be considered a distinct focus of the stay. However, the beach perspective is not the only topic. In Gedesby, the medieval shipping harbor for southern Falster, the canal known as “Strømmen,” the storm surge walking tour, and several historic buildings come together. The beach can therefore be viewed as an independent stretch of coast alongside the town’s historical attractions.

In the Middle Ages, Gedesby was an important shipping harbor for southern Falster. Via the canal known as “Strømmen,” boats could sail into the Baltic Sea near Gedesby.

Storm surge walking tour through the area

The historical walking tour “Stormfloden 1872 i Gedesby” is approximately 10 kilometers long. It follows the 1872 storm surge through Gedesby and the surrounding area. Along the way, there are audio stories about places along the route. The approximate distance remains a concrete planning reference without making it an exact length. If the walking tour is to be completed in full, the route requires its own block of time in the day’s schedule. The audio stories accompany the places along the route and keep the connection to the 1872 storm surge present throughout the tour. For the full walk, individual pace and breaks must be taken into account. The approximate route length leaves room for arranging your own schedule without specifying a fixed walking time.

Early local history and Gedesby Mølle

Gedesby was first mentioned in 1135. The place name has roots in the Viking Age. Gedesby Mølle is Denmark’s southernmost Dutch windmill. It replaced an earlier post mill that stood farther north; today, Gammelgade No. 5 is located at its former site. The former mill site is therefore farther north than Gedesby Mølle.

Church, riding school, and cycling route

Gedesby Church has a Dutch winged altarpiece from 1573. The old riding school from 1724 can be seen from Gedesby Cemetery. The 34-kilometer cycling route “Det sydligste Danmark” passes through Gedesby. The small church can only be visited by prior arrangement with the church administrator. A visit to the church therefore cannot be added spontaneously to the cycling route; arrangements with the church administrator must be made in advance. The 34 kilometers of the cycling route and the approximately 10 kilometers of the historical walking tour are two routes of different lengths. For the cycling route, the length is the practical planning reference; for the church, it is the prior arrangement. The arrangement with the church administrator is therefore part of the visitor’s personal preparations for a church visit. The fixed length of the cycling route and the approximate distance of the walking tour remain separate planning details.
