Vaeggerloese: Birdlife, Mill Culture and Cycling Route

Bøtø Nor: Wetland and Birdlife

Shallow lakes, meadows and reed beds characterize the Bøtø Nor bird protection area. The wetland is particularly important for birds in autumn. For nature observations, the water areas, meadows and reeds come together there to form a distinct landscape theme. Anyone wishing to focus their stay on birdlife can plan the nature part of the day around this wetland and its observation opportunities.

The birdlife can be observed from two bird towers. One of the towers is accessible via a ramp and is designed for people with disabilities and people with walking difficulties. When choosing an observation point, this ramp can be taken into account if step-free access is needed. Species that can be observed include ducks, waders, white-tailed eagles, marsh harriers and cranes. The towers therefore provide fixed viewpoints across the wetland, while the wildlife determines the focus of the observation.

Cycling Route and Route Layout

The 38-km “Kyst til kyst” cycling route is fully signposted and designated as Route 418. It passes over a hill near Væggerløse and offers a view over the Guldborgsund. The route length is a fixed factor in planning the day; the complete signage and route number give the ride a clearly marked structure. For planning the day, the 38 kilometres and the hill near Væggerløse form part of the individual organization of the ride.

The route runs from Marielyst towards Væggerløse. Along the way, places including Stouby Mølle and Stouby Glaspusteri can be visited. A cycling excursion can therefore combine the signposted route with individual cultural destinations without losing sight of the route itself. From Marielyst, the two destinations can be planned as possible stops on the way towards Væggerløse.

Historical Evidence and Mill Culture

Bøtø Nor Gl. Pumpestation is a cultural history museum and a unique historical monument. Gammelholm is a ruin in the area around Væggerløse.

Stouby Mølle is the only mill of its kind in Denmark powered by a star wheel that drives three millstones. The mill shop at Stouby Mølle sells coffee, water, ice cream, locally produced specialties and handicrafts. The mill therefore combines a technical detail with a specific offering on site.

Væggerløse Church has a Romanesque chancel and nave, a late medieval tower and two extensions from 1861. Several construction phases can therefore be seen at a single historic site.

Bus Connection to Nykøbing F

Two bus routes to Nykøbing F run through Væggerløse. In addition to the cycling tour, this provides a specific bus connection for travel between Væggerløse and Nykøbing F. The two places can therefore be included in the same travel plans.

For further orientation, you can also include Gedesby, Nykøbing Falster, Elkenøre, Guldborg, Kettinge, Nykøbing Falster, Idestrup and Stubbekøbing in your plans.
