Alby in southeastern Öland combines archaeological traces, art, distinctive landscapes and a health and wellness centre. The village’s history stretches far back: in the northern part of Alby, a settlement dating from the Early to the Late Stone Age is known to have existed and was investigated around 1970.

Archaeological Traces in the Village

The preserved cultural layer makes the past particularly tangible. It was up to 0.3 m thick and contained unburnt bones, flint flakes, postholes and hearths. The combination of unburnt bones, flint flakes, postholes and hearths encompasses organic remains as well as traces of structures and fire. These finds distinguish Alby's archaeological record from a mere historical name reference and show that specific evidence of earlier human activity has been preserved here.

Evidence of the past was also found beneath the present-day buildings. In 1976, a more or less continuous cultural layer was discovered in the central and southern parts of the village. The northern settlement and the cultural layer discovered beneath the buildings in 1976 are located in different parts of the village. Together with the Stone Age settlement in the north, this creates a picture of the documented local history spread across several areas of the village. Art and Regional Culture

Another cultural highlight is Galleri Blå Porten. The gallery began operating in 1985 and has represented numerous artists over the years. Its exhibition space covers approximately 60 m². Alongside the archaeological traces, Alby therefore also places a venue for contemporary or later-created art at the centre of attention.

Wetland and Stora Alvaret

The landscape perspective includes the Triberga-Alby mosse wetland. It is representative of the wetlands of Stora Alvaret. For visitors who are not looking exclusively for art or local history on Öland, the wetland is an independent reason to view the surrounding area from a natural perspective.

Albylen is a health and wellness centre in southeastern Öland. Its facilities include spinning, floorball, table tennis, circuit training and a sauna. Albylen also has a gym that visitors can use. Regional food culture is also represented in Alby. Ölands Köksmejeri is located in Alby in southeastern Öland and produces artisan cheese from the milk of Öland cows and exclusively natural raw materials. Its range includes semi-hard cheeses, salad cheese and flavoured cream cheese.
