Karlevi on Öland: Alvar, Nature and Rune Stone

Karlevi combines the open landscape of the alvar with a distinctive route for hikers and cyclists, a wetland for birdwatching, and an important testimony to Nordic history. If you would like to combine nature experiences with culture on your trip, the area offers several clearly distinct points of interest for this purpose.

Exploring the Stora Alvarleden

The Stora Alvarleden is an approximately 13 km-long hiking trail across the alvar from Karlevi to Möckelmossen that can be traveled by bicycle. Its course across the Stora alvaret is also important for orientation: the route follows an old transport route from Karlevi to Frösslunda and onward to the Resmo–Stenåsa road. This establishes not only the length of the trail but also its landscape connection with the expansive alvar area.

The Stora Alvarleden is marked with small piles of stones. Part of the route runs through the Södra Karlevi Nature Reserve. There is a parking area with information boards at each end of the trail. In addition, there is a small parking area approximately 100 meters south of Karlevi stenkvarn, on the eastern side of Road 136 by the gate. The three parking areas are not located in the same place: two are at the ends of the route and are associated with information boards; the additional small area is separate, approximately 100 meters south of Karlevi stenkvarn, on the eastern side of Road 136 by the gate. The piles of stones, on the other hand, mark the course of the route across the alvar.

Wetland and Nature Reserve

The Tranekärr wetland extends from north to south across the two Karlevi alvars. It offers good opportunities for birdwatching. The area thus complements the open trail and alvar landscape with a habitat where observing birds is the main focus.

In the Karlevi Södra Nature Reserve, sheep grazing shapes the Karlevi alvar. Grazing creates a habitat for plants that depend on abundant sunlight and short vegetation. Those interested in the nature of the alvar therefore find not only a vast landscape here, but also a documented connection between land use and plant habitat.

Karlevistenen as a Historical Point of Reference

Karlevi also has an important cultural and historical point of reference in Karlevistenen. The stone is considered Öland’s most significant runestone. It was probably erected by Danes who were on their way home after the Battle of Fyrisvallarna, shortly before the year 1000. The cautious dating and probable origin are part of the historical character of this monument; they should therefore not be interpreted further as established individual details about its creation.
