Ylläs shapes travel plans in Äkäslompolo in different ways throughout the year: in winter, the lift and ski bus take you to the ski area, while in summer you can reach the summit on foot. There are also opportunities for cycling and paddling, as well as ways to learn about the local nature and culture. Which of these aspects interests you most may influence your choice of where to stay.

Ylläs in winter: lift, slopes and bus

From Äkäslompolo, the Kuru lift takes you to the summit of Ylläs. Ylläs Ski Resort Äkäslompolo has a separate practice area for small children and beginners. The gentler slopes in the lower part of the ski area are also suitable for children and beginners. The Lännenlevelä slope is up to 200 metres wide—a specific feature to consider if you want to learn more about the individual runs.

From November to early May, the Ylläs Ski Bus connects Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi with the ski area. During the ski season, it also connects the services and hotels in Äkäslompolo with Ylläs Ski Resort Äkäslompolo. The bus also stops in front of the Yllästunturin Luontokeskus Kellokas visitor centre on Tunturintie. These seasonal connections can be useful for finding your way around the village and planning ski days.

Summer trails and water trips

In summer, hiking trails and service roads in the ski area lead to the summit of Ylläs from Ylläs Ski Resort Äkäslompolo. This means access to the mountain varies with the season: the Kuru lift is one option for reaching the summit, while trails lead up in summer. The northern slopes of Ylläs offer views across Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.

Cycling routes also offer a variety of experiences. The family-friendly Kesänkijärven polkaisu loop starts in the village, goes to Lake Kesänkijärvi and returns through the forests of Nilivaara. A cycling route around Äkäslompolo passes Karilan Navettagalleria, where you can stop for refreshments. If you prefer to be on the water, you can paddle along the Äkäsjoki from Äkäslompolo to the Muoniojoki and onward to the Swedish border. The lakes in Äkäslompolo are also suitable for circular paddling trips, so there is no need to arrange a separate pick-up at the end.

Experience nature and stop along the way

The Äkäslompolo Story Trail can be explored on foot or by bicycle with the whole family. Another summer option for a break is the shelter by Lake Kesänkijärvi and the Varkaankuru day-trip hut: both are easy-to-reach rest stops. In Varkaankuru, natural snow remains longest on the slopes in spring. This seasonal feature adds to the experience of the trails and the surrounding mountain area.

Visitor centre and local history

The Yllästunturin Luontokeskus Kellokas visitor centre brings together several cultural points of interest. The Meän elämää exhibition introduces local nature and culture, and the centre also hosts changing art exhibitions. The Savottamuseo is part of the centre and features exhibits on the history of forestry work and forest workers’ accommodation. The visitor centre is accessible and suitable for families with children.

You can also discover the Tano House, the oldest building in Äkäslompolo. If you want to combine culture and nature during your stay, you can complement this glimpse of local history with a visit to the centre and its exhibitions. Alongside the mountain, trails and water, local history and art are also possible interests to consider for your trip.
