Sirkkakoski is located on Lakes Miekojärvi and Lankojärvi. The lakes, harbour life and village culture give the place its own distinctive character. If you would like to plan your trip around activities, you will find a range of options here: boating and fishing, winter ski trails, a floodlit fitness trail, and insights into the village’s history.

Lakes, Harbour and Fishing

From the fishing harbour, you can go boating on Lake Miekojärvi. Fresh fish is sold at the harbour; local fishermen sell fish from Lake Miekojärvi directly to individuals and businesses. Live crayfish are also available. If you are especially interested in fishing and life on the lake, you will find several specific themes for your stay—from boating to seeing local fish sales.

Sirmet trips depart from the Sirkkakoski marina at Pientie 3. The Sirmet ferry operated by Lapland Wild Fish is also suitable for guests with reduced mobility. The Miekojärvi trolling marathon and the Great Lure Test 2024 used the boating and fishing harbour as their event centre. The event took place from 17 to 21 July 2024.

Explore the Outdoors

In winter, a network of ski trails several dozen kilometres long runs around the village and the lakes. If you are interested in cross-country skiing, you can therefore include Sirkkakoski in your travel plans with these extensive routes in mind. A floodlit fitness trail offers another way to enjoy outdoor exercise. Kivilahti is at the end of the village road and serves both as a swimming beach and as a place for seine-net fishing.

You can also experience the landscape at specific locations: you can watch the flowing Sirkkakoski rapids from the village association’s shelter. The area is also on a busy migratory bird route; some migratory birds stay here to breed. If you are interested in bird migration and nature, you can consider this distinctive feature alongside the lakes and rapids as part of the place’s character.

Village Life and History

The old school now serves as a village hall. Village evenings and various events are held there. Since 2010, Sirkkakoski has hosted stage dances on Midsummer Eve and lantern dances in autumn. Together with the village hall, these events reflect a community cultural life that spans different seasons.

The Maakansanmuseo collection comprises about 1,600 objects, each with its own story. Sirkkakoski was founded in 1738 by Jonas Hansson, who served as a guide for the French Maupertuis expedition. An expedition had already landed at the Sirkkakoski rapids in 1736 to set up equipment for triangulation.

Another distinctive place is Verstas Kotila, Sanna Posti’s shoe-repair and saddlery shop and workshop. In this way, local history is connected with craftsmanship. You can also find other destinations at Sinettä, Kemi, Mäntyjärvi, Pello, Tornio, Simo, Ylläsjärvi and Äkäslompolo.
