The Luosto area is part of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, one of Finland’s oldest national park areas. A simple way to plan your stay is to consider what you’d most like to do: spend time on the slopes, go hiking, or combine a variety of nature experiences. Luosto and its immediate surroundings offer destinations for different activities. Direct bus services from Rovaniemi Airport to Luosto operate year-round. Check the timetable before travelling, as routes and frequencies may change.

Trails and seasons in Luosto

The trail to the summit of Ukko-Luosto is four kilometres long and leads to a viewpoint; the ascent involves climbing 575 steps. The summit trail is accessible only in summer and autumn. In winter, there is a high risk of avalanches, so check the latest official advisories before setting out on a hike.

Snowshoe trails are also available in Luosto. They are marked with blue trail signs but are not maintained. One route starts at the Luosto Gate (Luoston portti), leads to Tikkalaavu and continues from there towards the summit of Ukko-Luosto. A circular route via Torvinen maja café is about 7.5 kilometres long. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.

For mountain bikers, a route starts in the centre of Luosto at the national park entrance gates. It follows the ski trail towards the Ukkoluosto car park and continues from there along a ski trail towards Lampivaara. Seasonal access and trail conditions may vary; check the current situation before your ride.

Slopes, a pond and a circular trail

Lapland Ski Resort Luosto has ten slopes. Two are in the family slope area: the Adventure Trail, which winds through the forest, and the wide Family Slope. A magic carpet lift takes visitors up to the tube and sledding hill. This means the named runs and the hill can be considered as separate options at the ski resort, rather than as a single offering.

At Ahvenlampi Pond in the centre of Luosto, there is an easily accessible fishing spot. Boardwalks around the pond make it easier to cast from the shore; a permit is required for fishing. A 2.8-kilometre, accessible trail also circles Ahvenlampi, with a traditional Finnish kota by the lake. The trail is suitable for families and is also maintained and lit in winter. As maintenance and lighting may change, check the conditions before visiting in winter.

Amethyst and reindeer park

Amethyst was discovered at Lampivaara in Luosto. It is a rare, purple, translucent variety of quartz. At the Lampivaara Amethyst Mine, visitors can search for their own lucky amethyst and keep it as a souvenir. The mine welcomes visitors year-round; in some weeks in May and November, travelling there may be unsafe due to weather conditions. Confirm the current visiting and travel conditions before your trip.

The Kopara Reindeer Park is located in the immediate surroundings of the destination. Visitors can meet reindeer, take sleigh rides of varying lengths and learn about traditional reindeer husbandry and the life of a reindeer herder. Poronpolku is a self-guided circular walk through the park and takes about 15 to 30 minutes. This is an approximate duration; confirm the current access conditions before visiting.

Explore the wider region

Those looking beyond individual trails and slopes will find a total of 150 kilometres of cross-country ski trails in the wider region, connecting the Luosto and Pyhä ski resorts. The length available for use may vary depending on conditions and maintenance. When planning, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between the slopes at Lapland Ski Resort Luosto and this regional cross-country trail network.
