Utsjoki can be explored along several nature trails and routes through landscapes with different characteristics. The routes range from 1.4 kilometres to a 35-kilometre circular trail. They also offer insights into Sámi architectural and cultural history, views of the Teno River Valley, and a church that is open during services and serves as an open trail church in summer. Those planning a trip to Utsjoki can choose between nature experiences, culture and longer hiking routes.

Nature Trails and Hiking Routes

Right next to the village, the 1.4-kilometre Áilegas Nature Trail crosses open fell country to the summit of Áilegas. A viewpoint on the Áilegas Trail offers views over the Teno River Valley and the village of Utsjoki. The 5.9-kilometre Kalkujoenlampi Trail starts in the village at Miessipolku 4. Because of its steep, rocky climbs and descents, it is considered challenging. When planning this route, you can take this assessment into account when choosing a hike, rather than judging the difficulty by distance alone.

The Utsjoki Hiking Trail is 35 kilometres long and is a circular route that starts and ends in the church village of Utsjoki. The Utsjoen retkeilyreitti also starts in the church village, but leads through the Paistunturi Wilderness Area. Another option for a shorter loop is the 3.5-kilometre Utsjoki Geological Nature Trail. It starts in the village and provides information about the local soil, its formations and how they developed. The trail offers views of the village and the Teno River Valley. The route lengths help you compare the different trails by distance; on their own, they do not indicate how long they will take.

The 14-kilometre Arctic Time Travel Trail is a nature trail in Utsjoki. It starts behind Utsjokisuu School at Utsjoentie 48 and passes partly through mountain birch forest and partly through open fell country. Two different types of landscape are therefore a feature of this route. The 2.3-kilometre Ulriikan polku passes through Utsjoki’s church landscape and a nationally significant cultural landscape. The route also explores Sámi architectural and cultural history.

Church Landscape and Culture

On Lake Mantojärvi, Utsjoki Church, the vicarage, the old sacristy and the church cottages form the northern part of the nationally valuable Utsjokitalo landscape area. The church is open during services and serves as an open trail church in summer. Concerts can be held in the church, which is considered to have excellent acoustics. These places and routes offer different ways to explore the area’s cultural history: Ulriikan polku presents Sámi architectural and cultural history, while the buildings on Lake Mantojärvi are collectively part of the Utsjokitalo landscape.

Utsjoki’s municipal tourist information centre is located in Kylätalo Giisá. It has regional brochures, as well as tips and information for a trip to Utsjoki. The same building houses Galleria Giisá, which hosts changing exhibitions. Those looking to combine an interest in culture with local orientation will find both exhibitions and travel information there.

More Experiences and Practical Information

The Kalkujoenlampi rest area has a day hut, a fire pit, a dry toilet, an eco-waste collection point and a woodshed. A permit is required to drive on Ailikkaantie. It is available at Kylätalo Giisá or via the QR code at the start of the road. This requirement is especially relevant when planning a drive along this road.

Fishing takes place year-round near the church village of Utsjoki. The Teno has good fishing waters both upstream and downstream of the village. The route from the village crosses the Teno to Norway over the Sámi Bridge. Utsjoki also has a 2.3-kilometre cross-country ski trail maintained and lit by the municipality. The trails in Utsjoki, Nuorgam and Karigasniemi have only small elevation changes, making them suitable for people with different fitness levels.
