The centres of Tornio and Haparanda lie side by side, and the border between them is easy to cross on foot or by bicycle. If you would like to include culture, nature and activities in the Finnish-Swedish border region in your travel plans, Tornio offers a range of ways to do so. Options include Finnish art and regional history, as well as birdwatching, hiking trails and winter activities.

Art and history on both sides of the border

The Aine Art Museum houses a permanent collection of Finnish art, owned by the Aineen Kuvataidesäätiö. The museum also offers art education workshops and events. This gives you another way to get to know Tornio through art and its interpretation. The museum is in the Länsiranta district, close to the Swedish border.

The Tornionlaakso Museum – Tornedalens museum focuses on the culture and history of the Tornionlaakso on both sides of the Finnish-Swedish border. It specialises in the way of life in this region and in border-related phenomena. If you are interested in life in a border region, you will find a different focus here than at the Aine Art Museum: regional culture, history and border-related topics take centre stage.

The tip of the tower of Alatornio Church is also linked to the history of surveying: it is one of the points in the Struve Geodetic Arc. This point adds a specific link to a historic survey chain to the cultural themes.

Wetlands, birdwatching and garden plants

The Alkunkarinlahti nature trail runs through a wetland suitable for day hikes and an area for birdwatching. There are two birdwatching towers and a shelter at Alkunkarinlahti. The focus is therefore on both the trail through the landscape and the designated observation points. If you like to combine your trip with experiences in nature, this is an alternative to the museums.

Tornio’s arboretum park offers another nature-related attraction. Admission is free. You can observe a variety of plants growing in Nordic conditions, and the park is particularly suited to people interested in gardens. Nature lovers can thus choose between two different options: the wetland and its birdwatching opportunities, or the arboretum’s plant life.

Trails and winter activities

Tornio’s network of hiking trails connects Karunki, Arpela and Kantojärvi via maintained paths. There are also fitness trails in various parts of the city. In winter, cross-country ski trails are maintained in several locations, including Kokkokangas, Kaakamo and Karunki. The longest continuous routes include the approximately 25-kilometre Karunki–Kantojärvi and Lautamaa–Kallinkangas routes in Keminmaa.

For a winter activity away from the cross-country ski trails, you can ride a snowmobile on marked snowmobile routes in Tornio. The routes and trails cater to different interests: the ski trails are for cross-country skiing, while the marked routes are intended for snowmobiles. Which of these options shapes your trip depends on whether you are more interested in art and regional history, nature observation, trails or winter activities.
