Nienhagen Between the Beach and the Ghost Forest
Accommodation in Nienhagen
The Baltic Sea beach and the Ghost Forest shape the character of the seaside resort of Nienhagen. If you want to spend most of your stay by the water, you’ll find a beach stretching several kilometres, with gently sloping water. If you’re interested in forests and nature, consider walks through the approximately 180-hectare mixed forest. The coastline, shaped by the Ice Age, is also part of the landscape; it is subject to strict protection requirements.

Beach, Access Points and Steep Coast
Nienhagen’s sandy and natural beach is 4 km long. Three stairways, a natural access point and a winding, accessible route lead to the beach. The gently sloping water is considered particularly suitable for children and older people. The beach’s length and the different types of access can both help you choose a holiday destination.
Along the steep coast are stretches of beach with fine sand that are suitable for swimming. The steep coast itself consists of Ice Age deposits and is subject to strict protection requirements. The beach and coastal landscape therefore offer different ways to enjoy your stay: swimming at suitable stretches or exploring the protected natural environment as a travel theme in its own right. This coastal section near Nienhagen also offers opportunities for surfing and sailing.
Walks in the Ghost Forest
The Ghost Forest is an approximately 180-hectare mixed forest that surrounds the seaside resort of Nienhagen and is part of the Stolteraa Nature Reserve. It is home to oak, beech, hornbeam and ash trees, some up to 170 years old. Scenic hiking trails wind through the forest; on longer walks, you’ll encounter bizarre, fairytale-like trees and unspoilt nature.
If you choose to make the forest the focus of your trip, you’ll find a different landscape experience here than at the beach: ancient tree species, hiking trails and the unusual shapes of the trees define your visit. The Ghost Forest brings together several of Nienhagen’s defining features—forest, nature conservation and a striking natural setting—without the need for a set itinerary.
Events and Baltic Sea Experiences
The traditional Ghost Forest Festival is a fixture on Nienhagen’s events calendar in August. Most public events in the Baltic Sea resort take place at the leisure centre at Strandstraße 16, behind the daycare centre. These include exhibitions, concerts and film evenings. If you’d like to include public cultural events in your travel plans alongside the beach and nature, you’ll find specific ideas here to help shape your stay.
The Nienhagen reef research platform is clearly visible from the beach promenade. It also adds a maritime dimension to the character of the place.
