Tessin near Boizenburg: Moor, Nature and Village History

The restoration project in the Tessin Moor was completed in 2007. Nature, local history and mobility offer three different perspectives from which to read Tessin near Boizenburg.

Nature

In the municipality, a repurposed WEMAG transformer building is used as a bird conservation tower. The tower has nesting aids for owls and bats. As a stopping point, the bird conservation tower is included in Nature Watch hiking trails. Equestrian farms can be found both in Tessin and in Kuhlenfeld.

Tessin also has a renovated inn with guest rooms and a hall, geared towards visitors. Hot and cold dishes are served there. History

The first documented mention of Tessin dates from 1230 and appears in the Ratzeburg tithe register. Alt-Kuhlenfeld was settled in 1700.

The historic village layout of Tessin is considered a curved linear village resembling a village with a central open space; farmsteads are absent on the northwestern side. Tessin near Boizenburg includes the districts of Eulenberg and Kuhlenfeld; there are also architectural monuments.

The Hamburg–Berlin highway was built in 1827 and divided the Tessin fields. The Hamburg–Berlin railway followed in 1847 and ran along the southern part of the Tessin fields. Thus, the settlement pattern, local development and the later transport routes can be viewed as separate historical layers.

Historically, a church path led from Tessin through the Wiebendorf Forest to Zahrensdorf. Anyone who reads the local history attentively can distinguish between the settlement pattern described, the routes of the highway and railway, and this historically documented path. The church path should be understood as a former connection, not as a statement about present-day routes.

Geographical Location

Tessin near Boizenburg is one of the municipalities in the Boizenburg-Land administrative district; at the same time, the municipality is located in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is administered by this district.

The districts of Eulenberg and Kuhlenfeld belong to Tessin near Boizenburg. Together with the architectural monuments, they mark the municipality’s internal structure and architectural points of reference.

In addition to Tessin near Boizenburg, the Boizenburg-Land administrative district also includes Greven, Dersenow, Bengerstorf, Nostorf, Teldau, Besitz, Gresse and Neu Gülze.
