Ludwigslust-Parchim: Castles, Nature and Waterways

Palace and fortress history

Ludwigslust Palace was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg. Together with its park and town, it forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North”. The palace is at the heart of an almost completely preserved late Baroque town layout. Its notable features include a former court church and an English-style landscape park. The palace presents art and courtly residential culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The museum in Dömitz Fortress focuses on its own historical themes: it explores the history of the fortress and town, as well as that of the Elbe, the harbour and the bridges. Fritz Reuter, temporary exhibitions and art exhibitions are also among its subjects. Dömitz Citadel is a Renaissance fortress laid out in the Italian style in the shape of a pentagon. Its layout is defined by bastions, casemates and a drawbridge.

Monasteries, castles and historical everyday culture

At Zarrentin Monastery, guided tours cover the history of the former Cistercian convent, the lives of the nuns and the building’s architecture. There is also a permanent exhibition about the monastery on the ground floor. Those interested in architectural history and monastic life can explore the subject in two different ways here: through the exhibition and the guided tours.

Neustadt-Glewe Castle offers guided tours that can be booked during opening hours and outside them. In this historic setting, traditional castle thalers and castle-maidens’ salad are served, as well as steaks and fish. At Pingelhof, the focus is on history and working life in the past: the farmstead includes a thatched hall house dating from 1607 and traces of historic working life. Staged tours explore the history of the farmstead, its people and life then and now. The museum experience is complemented by events held throughout the year.

Moorland, protected areas and water

Near Zarrentin, the calcareous fen is part of the Schaalelauf Nature Reserve. Visitors can explore the moor from the nature trail. There is also an approximately 4 km circular walk around Kirchensee on the Strangen peninsula. It starts at the car park beside Zarrentin church. The approximate distance gives you a practical guide for planning your day.

Protected areas in the district also include the Lewitz, Sternberg Lake District Nature Park and the Schaalsee UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Lewitz is described as offering rich flora and fauna as part of the nature experience. Alongside historic sites, protected landscapes are another possible focus for your trip.

Water sports take place on the Müritz-Elde Waterway in Ludwigslust-Parchim district. Dömitz is accessible by public transport, car and bicycle. The town has its own harbour with mooring facilities for all types of water sports craft. Passenger boat services operated by Heckert also run from Dömitz. This means you can combine your stay in Dömitz with a visit to the harbour as well as with the history of the fortress and town.

Town history and regional cuisine

At the Kulturmühle Parchim, Restaurant & Café MAHLWERK serves fresh regional cuisine. The extensively renovated mill is also set to house a two-storey exhibition on the town’s history, from its beginnings to the present day. You can therefore consider Parchim as a cultural and culinary destination when planning your trip, without conflating the two offerings.
