Suckow between the Ruhner Hills and Mooster Meadow

Suckow lies between the hills of the Ruhner Hills and the plain of Mooster Meadow. Its location combines a hilly landscape with open expanses and gives the village a clear setting for walks, culture and regional history.

Landscape and arrival

The approximately 1-kilometre-long chestnut avenue from Suckow towards Mentin invites visitors to take a stroll amid its beautiful trees. For arrival, Suckow is located near the A 24 motorway and has a motorway entrance and exit. Cycle Route 1 runs from Marnitz via Ruhner Berg, Griebow, Mentin and Suckow back to Marnitz.

History in the village and region

Suckow was first mentioned in historical records in 1328 under the name “Sucowe”. Since the Middle Ages, the village had been divided between Mecklenburg and Brandenburg. Until the 20th century, there was therefore a municipality called Suckow both in the Mecklenburg district of Parchim and in the Brandenburg district of Ostprignitz.

The village church in Suckow is a fieldstone hall church surrounded by a fieldstone wall near the B321; the church building and churchyard are visible from the road. Its origins may date back to the 14th century, while the present building is attributed to the second quarter of the 16th century. A beam dated 1588 is associated with the church tower and may indicate that it was added to the previously towerless building around 1587. Inside is a neo-Gothic altarpiece depicting the Crucifixion, created by the artist Thomas Fischer in 1867.

At the intersection of Schulstraße and Dorfstraße, a memorial stone made of red brick commemorates the death march of prisoners from Sachsenhausen concentration camp in April 1945. A large black dog also features in several surviving legends from Suckow.

Ruhner Hills and cultural destinations

East of Suckow, the landscape of the Ruhner Hills has been designated a protected landscape area since 1994. The nature trail there uses information panels and 23 labelled erratic boulders to explain the origins of the landscape and its former use. The Ruhner Tower has a 32.5-metre-high viewing platform, accessible via 180 steps, offering views across Mecklenburg and Brandenburg.

The Slavic castle of Ruhner Berge is located nearby. Despite being more than 1,100 years old, it is a very well-preserved archaeological monument, with an outer diameter of up to 70 metres and an approximately three-metre-high rampart. Also nearby is the Something Great Arts Centre, located in the outbuildings of Mentin Castle; it focuses on contemporary dance and performance. The “Alpaka und Lama Ranch Ruhner Berge” adventure farm run by the Köllner family is located in the Suckow district.
