Matzlow-Garwitz between waterways, the Lewitz and village churches

Water, the Lewitz and paths

Situated between the waterway and the Lewitz, Matzlow-Garwitz brings together waterways, landscape and village culture. The Müritz-Elde Waterway separates Matzlow and Garwitz. Garwitz has a marina with around 50 berths and an outdoor swimming pool supplied with water from the Elde; boats stop at Lewitzcamp, where campers can stay in a tent or caravan. For orientation on site, the marina, outdoor swimming pool and Lewitzcamp in Garwitz form specific water-related points, while the waterway separates Matzlow and Garwitz.

The Matzlow-Garwitz marina also has a rest area for waterway hikers, or boat landing stage, pitches for motorhomes and a boat rental service. The marina therefore brings together a rest area for waterway hikers, boat rental and motorhome pitches.

The European bird sanctuary Lewitz is considered worth seeing on the Garwitz canoe circular tour. The Garwitz-Damm Elde hiking trail is regarded as a recommended destination for hikes and cycling tours into the Lewitz landscape conservation area. The landscape conservation area is characterized by forest and meadow landscapes. The canoe circular tour and the Elde hiking trail represent water and land routes through the Lewitz region.

A newly built cycle path with a low level of difficulty and a length of approximately 9 km leads from Neustadt-Glewe via Neuhof through the Lewitz directly to Matzlow-Garwitz. The length of approximately 9 km and the low level of difficulty provide a clear framework for planning a cycling excursion through the Lewitz landscape; the route connects Neustadt-Glewe, Neuhof and Matzlow-Garwitz.

Churches and crafts

The present half-timbered church in Matzlow was consecrated in 1789; its battered west tower was also added in half-timbering in 1831. The chapel in Matzlow received a Sauer organ in 2020. Those interested in history encounter half-timbering and an organ of more recent date here in the same locality. The years 1789, 1831 and 2020 mark three different stages in the history of the locality.

At the Kunstpöttchen in Matzlow, Iris Thees creates handmade functional ceramics, from egg cups to complete dinnerware sets. Garwitz is home to the Gothic village church made of fieldstone and bricks from the 14th century. It contains unique memorial plaques and a valuable carved altar from the 15th century. Matzlow and Garwitz thus have different cultural emphases: craftsmanship on the one hand, and ecclesiastical architectural and furnishings history on the other. The ceramics range from egg cups to complete dinnerware sets; the village church combines fieldstone and bricks with memorial plaques and a carved altar.

Swimming and leisure

Eldebad Garwitz has a baby pool, a non-swimmer pool and a swimming pool with four 50-metre lanes. The facilities also include a water slide, play areas and a volleyball court. Eldebad thus combines swimming pools, a water slide, play and volleyball to offer various leisure activities. The four 50-metre lanes give the swimming pool a precise dimension.
