The area around the village features a high proportion of pine and beech forests as well as gently rolling terrain; to the south, the landscape descends toward the Nebel lowlands and the Bützow-Güstrow Canal. Groß Schwiesow was first recorded in a document dating from 1237. The former grain store, Alter Speicher, was converted into a community centre in 2001; various events and festivals are held there.
