Putbus is a town on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany.

Landscape

Through its district of Lauterbach, Putbus has a seaside resort location; Lauterbach is considered the oldest seaside resort on Rügen and in Pomerania. Putbus has been a state-recognized seaside resort since 1997.

The palace park is located in the immediate surroundings of Putbus. The island of Rügen lies in the area surrounding Putbus. Muglitzer Ort, Pulitz Island, and Ruschbrink are located near Putbus.

Culture

Putbus was founded as a planned town in the Classicist style; its urban ensemble was designed around the palace and palace park.

A large part of the historic town plan has been preserved and is considered an important example of its architectural period. Putbus is known as the White City because of the white-painted houses of the former princely residence on Rügen. Putbus is also known as the Rose City; this is associated with the tradition of planting rose bushes in front of the houses.

History

The first seaside resort in Pomerania was established near this district in 1816. The construction of the Goor bathhouse helped introduce seaside resort architecture to Rügen.
