Abisko National Park showcases a high-Arctic mountain landscape of birch forests, open heathland and meadows, as well as rugged, sparsely vegetated mountains. The plant life also shapes its character: it is among the most species-rich in the Swedish mountains. Visitors choosing Abisko for active days will find a variety of ways to explore, from trails along Torneträsk and the canyon to seasonal tours on Nuolja. The landscape and the time of year determine which of these experiences take centre stage.

Hiking between the Fjäll, Canyon and Lake

The Kungsleden passes through the area and heads south between Lapporten (Čuonjavággi) and Mount Njullá (Nuolja). Another clearly described route is the Njakajaure Nature Trail: it follows the orange-marked trail and the Kungsleden for just under three kilometres to Marmorbrottet. Some marble was quarried there in the 19th century. This route combines the Fjäll landscape with a modest historical connection, without the distance itself indicating how long the walk will take.

A trail leads to the shore of Torneträsk and is about 1.2 kilometres long one way. Depending on the season, yellow wagtails and bluethroats can be spotted in the birch heath along the way. The lakeshore also has an accessible fire pit with benches and information about Torneträsk. For a different perspective on the landscape, visit Abiskoeatnu Canyon: this dramatic, easily accessible gorge is near Naturum Abisko and the tourist station. A wooden boardwalk with railings offers views of steep rock walls and the clear water below; an accessible path also runs along the canyon.

The Hälsoslingan Fågelkullen trail passes the deep canyon. The view from the wind shelter on Fågelkullen stretches far into the distance. The route is considered relatively easy to walk, but includes roots, rocks and a few short, steep climbs. This route description can help you plan your day around the trail conditions mentioned.

Nature and the Seasons

The Hälsoslingan Njakajauristigen trail runs through the national park and offers glimpses of several habitat types. In summer, for example, mountain avens and Lapland rosebay may bloom along the trail. Njakajauristigen also offers views of Abiskojokk and Lapporten. One important seasonal restriction applies to the bird sanctuary in the delta at the mouth of Abiskojåkka: it must not be entered from 1 May to 31 July.

The view from the summer chairlift is another seasonal highlight: from there, you can see the Abisko Alps, Lapporten and Torneträsk. Abisko National Park often has clear skies between the surrounding mountains, even when nearby areas are cloudy. This is why it is considered one of Sweden’s most reliable places for observing the northern lights. However, sightings depend on the weather and solar activity.

Culture, Information and Guided Tours

Naturum Abisko has a permanent exhibition about the national park’s plant and animal life, geology and history. Guided tours and other activities are available there in summer; check the current schedule before your trip. Samevistet is a reconstruction of life in a settlement used in autumn and spring, with storage buildings, kåtas and drying racks. STF Abisko sells guided tours to Samevistet; availability may vary.

For travellers who want to join a guided hike, the Midnight Sun hike starts at the STF Aurora Sky Station at an altitude of 900 metres and leads to the summit of Nuolja at 1,164 metres. The seasonal tour includes a return ticket for the chairlift; availability may vary. Several hiking trails also start at the STF Aurora Sky Station. The summer chairlift takes about 20 minutes to reach an altitude of 900 metres above sea level, taking visitors up Nuolja to the station.

Winter Days on Nuolja

In winter, visitors can go ski touring from the Aurora Sky Station, with views of the Abisko Alps and Torneträsk. The winter route Glidaren heads south on a gentle descent for a short way towards Kårsavagge; snow and safety conditions vary. Abisko Adventure offers guided ski tours for beginners as well as visitors looking for guided off-piste skiing in the Abisko mountains. Booking is required, and conditions may vary.

Another seasonal activity is the Aurora snowshoe hike in Abisko. Snowshoes and hot drinks are included. Along the way, you may see tracks left by mountain hares, ptarmigans, foxes and lemmings; with a little luck, you may also spot moose tracks. Many animals live in Abisko’s birch forest in winter, but wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. Ski touring and snowshoeing offer different ways to experience the winter landscape.

Planning Your Stay

Abisko turist railway station is in Abisko National Park and about 800 metres from STF Abisko Turiststation and the Naturum Abisko visitor centre. Local trails may change. The Fjäll information centre in Abisko offers tips for trips in the surrounding area from experienced guides. STF Abisko Turiststation’s shop sells and rents outdoor clothing and equipment. Kungsleden Restaurant uses local ingredients wherever possible. A wood-fired sauna is located on the shore of Torneträsk, about one kilometre from the tourist station; check the booking information.

If you are looking for a hotel in Abisko, it is best to first decide when you want to travel and what you want to focus on during your stay. Summer hiking trails, Naturum’s seasonal programme and winter activities are subject to different conditions. For seasonal guided activities, it is a good idea to check dates and availability before your trip.
