Lannavaara combines local history with a clear focus on gold, gemstones and stonework. So, when planning your trip, it helps to start with a simple question: Would you mainly like to explore the history of the village, learn more about gemmology through crystals, or set aside time for a hike as well?

Gemmology and Gold Panning

Kristallen in Lannavaara is a knowledge centre for gemmology and stonework that is considered unique in Sweden. This gives the village a cultural appeal for travellers interested in gemstones and working with stone. At Kristallen, you can learn the basics of gold panning under guidance by appointment, then try searching for gold yourself in nature. The activity combines an introduction with the opportunity to search outdoors independently afterwards.

Illuminated Trail and Pilgrimage Trail

For time outdoors, Lannavaara has a 3.4-kilometre illuminated trail. Another option is the Laestadiusleden, a pilgrimage trail between Lannavaara and Lainio. The illuminated trail is defined by its specific length, while the Laestadiusleden is a hiking route connecting two places. You can therefore use a clearly measured trail and a pilgrimage route with two named endpoints as different points of reference when planning your trip.

The Origins of Lannavaara

The village’s history begins in 1873 with barley-growing trials by farmers from the villages of Soppero. The southern slope of Lannavaaraberget proved to be the only place in the area where the barley ripened. This agricultural experiment links the origins of the village to a specific slope and its growing conditions. In this chapter, the southern slope is not merely a backdrop but the crucial site of the cultivation trial.

Church and Memorial Stone

Lannavaara minneskyrka was built at the initiative of August Lundberg and the association Lapska missionens vänner in memory of Princess Eugénie. The church was consecrated in 1934 and extensively renovated in 1973. Next to it, a memorial stone to Lundberg stands on the site of his former homestead. Two distinct commemorative connections therefore meet in close proximity: the church was built in memory of Princess Eugénie, while the stone commemorates August Lundberg.

Another Chapter in the Village’s History

Lannavaara’s history also includes a mission school run in the village by Lapska missionens vänner for Sámi children from 1883 to 1916. This period forms a distinct chapter alongside the history of the church and memorial stone. Together with the village’s origins in 1873 and the church’s later consecration in 1934, it places local history in distinct periods.

Landscape and Getting There

On the way to Lannavaara, the landscape shifts from dense spruce and pine forests to more open areas with low, gnarled mountain birches, with white mountains rising in the background. For the drive from Kiruna or Kiruna Airport, allow about 1.5 hours as a rough guide. Routes and road conditions may change; check your specific route before setting off.
