Discover Nivala
Accommodation in Nivala
Nivala has something for a range of interests: Katvala Farm Museum offers insights into local history and living conditions in the past, while ski trails, hiking routes and birdwatching opportunities provide ways to enjoy nature. There is also a municipal art exhibition venue and the Uikko swimming pool. When choosing where to stay, you can consider which of these aspects of Nivala matter most for your trip.
Culture and local history
Katvala Farm Museum offers a comprehensive insight into local history, livelihoods and living conditions in different eras. Its themes range from farming and animal husbandry to tar burning and burial traditions. The museum thus connects the history of everyday life and work with insights into different traditions. Those interested in life in the past will find a different focus here than at an art exhibition.
Tillarigalleria, run by the City of Nivala, is an art exhibition venue. Admission to its exhibitions is free to the public. Another cultural history site, the Kyösti and Kalervo Kallio Museum, focuses on the lives of the President of the Republic and his son, who worked as a sculptor. The museum room dedicated to Kyösti Wilkuna is in the basement of Nivala Library; it opened to the public in June 1991.
The former Järvikylä dairy is also part of the region’s history: it was the last of Nivala’s village dairies to cease operations and is considered a regionally valuable part of the built cultural landscape. This site complements the museums with a record of the region’s former village economy.
Nature and active days
Nivala has more than 80 kilometres of regularly maintained ski and fitness trails. This figure covers both types of trail and offers a useful guide for travellers planning to include outdoor exercise in their stay. The Iso-Sydänmaan hiking trail is on a different scale: it is 56 kilometres long. Keep this distance in mind when choosing a hike and planning your day.
Kivenhakkaajan Nature Trail is in Järvikylä near Nivala and offers a chance to get to know the nature typical of the area. On the trail, wooden boardwalks lead from Nakkauksentie to the shelter at Lehmilampi; there are also several other shelters. Those interested in birdwatching can explore the three birdwatching towers in Sarjankylä-Erkkilä. The tower at Lake Erkkisjärvi near Nivala is a popular destination for birdwatchers. Birdwatching is also prominent across the wider region: Nivala lies along the migration routes of numerous bird species, and many birdwatchers visit or live in the area.
Swimming pool and other practical information
Uikko swimming pool has a water slide, a paddling pool and a diving board. Uikko also has a café and a bowling alley. This means you can enjoy several of the leisure centre’s activities during one visit, from swimming to bowling. If you’re looking for a different activity, Nivala’s golf course is a few kilometres from the town centre in the direction of Haapajärvi.
There are two specific points of reference for arriving by public transport: Nivala’s regional railway station is about one kilometre from the town centre. Buses go to the Matkahuolto bus station on the corner of Keskustie and Toritie. This information can help you take your arrival point into account when looking for a hotel in Nivala, without assuming a particular location for your accommodation.
