In the village of Ylivalli, in the rocky terrain of Isovuori, lies Pirunpesä, a round opening measuring 14 metres in diameter and 23 metres deep. Together with the trails, another natural cavity and local stories, the area offers ways to enjoy a nature-focused stay in Yli-Valli.

Pirunpesä and the rocky landscape

Stairs lead down to the bottom of the cavity, and the opening is fenced. A nearby observation tower offers a bird’s-eye view of the rocky hollow. This makes it possible to see Pirunpesä from different angles: from the stairs and from above. Those interested in the shape of the terrain can also visit Kollinluola in the same area. This naturally formed cavity is defined by a massive, flat slab of stone leaning against the rock to form a roof and wall. At Pirunpesä, the round opening in the rock catches the eye; at Kollinluola, it is the interplay of the slab and the rock—two distinct geological impressions in the area.

Walking and cycling trails

A signposted nature trail connects Juustoportti and Pirunpesä. It is 7.5 kilometres long on foot and 8.5 kilometres by bicycle. The cycling distance is therefore one kilometre longer than the walking route—a useful point of comparison when planning your route and choosing between the two modes of transport. There is also a 1-kilometre-long trail in the Pirunpesä area. It is considerably shorter than the route between Juustoportti and Pirunpesä, offering a different distance option for planning your visit.

Local history and stories

A statue commemorating Spede Pasanen was erected in the Pirunpesä area in June 2005. It recalls Pasanen’s contribution to clearing out Pirunpesä. The Paimenpojan mänty pine is also associated with a story: it is said that a shepherd boy died at the foot of the tree in the 1850s. The statue and the story of the tree offer a different perspective from the rock formations and trails, bringing memories of people and events into the experience of nature.

Practical information for your visit

Pirunpesä can be reached by car. Hikers can use a hut and an outdoor toilet in the area free of charge all year round. During the summer, a café is open next to the visitor area. It sells campfire coffee, homemade yeast buns, ice cream and other items; card payments are accepted. The café is seasonal, and its offerings and payment terms may change. Before your visit, check the current opening hours and conditions at the site, as well as the availability of the hut and outdoor toilet. This will help you plan realistically, taking into account both the café’s seasonal details and the facilities described as available year-round.
