In Paimio, forest trails and river landscapes meet a diverse museum culture. The town offers a range of ways to plan your activities: you can explore shorter sections of a long hiking trail, discover a canoe route from the town centre to the sea, or learn about the history of agriculture, crafts and technology.

Hiking trails through forest and rocky terrain

The Paimion polku is 18.7 kilometres long in total, and you can also choose shorter stages of the trail. It can be used on foot or by mountain bike. Its character is varied: the trail runs mostly as a forest path over rocks and through wooded areas. Some sections follow gravel roads, while short stretches use roads with light traffic. The Paimion polku thus combines different surfaces, rather than running uniformly through the forest for its entire length.

From a high hill, the view extends to Paimionlahti. Those interested in the landscape along the river will find another notable point of reference in the Lower Paimionjokilaakso: the area along the lower reaches of the Paimionjoki is considered a nationally valuable landscape area in Finland. The hiking trail and the river valley offer different ways to experience nature in the town.

By canoe from Jokipuisto to the sea

The Paimionjoki canoe route begins in the centre of Paimio at Jokipuisto and leads to Paimionlahti by the sea. It passes through peaceful river landscapes and is described as easy; beginners and families can also use it. Alongside the forest trails, there is a water route from a central starting point all the way to the coast. The Kuninkaantie, Finland’s oldest tourist road, also passes through Paimio, adding a historic road connection to the ways of exploring the town.

Museums on everyday life, agriculture and technology

The cultural history museum Paimion kotiseutumuseo is maintained by the City of Paimio. It consists of seven museum buildings, which were brought from different parts of Paimio to Museomäki in Oinila around 1950. The buildings illustrate the history of traditional agriculture. The focus here is on buildings and rural history, while other museums in the town each explore their own themes.

The specialist museum of electrical engineering, Paimion Sähkömuseo, is located in central Paimio. It presents the history of electrical engineering and lets visitors try out various electrical devices for themselves. Also in the centre is the crafts museum Miila, housed in a functionalist building. It focuses on everyday craft culture. Those interested in technology will therefore find a different focus here than at Miila, which showcases crafts in everyday life.

The August Pyölniittu Museum preserves the home and work environment of the self-taught scientist and village eccentric August Pyölniittu. It also documents the modest family life of his sisters Ida and Olga on a smallholding in the village of Maljamäki in Paimio. The property was turned into a museum in the 1980s. A visit exploring this subject shifts the focus from everyday technology and crafts to a specific family story and life on the farm.

Winter sports and mountain biking

The Paippi ski tunnel makes cross-country skiing possible even outside the main winter season. One lap is 700 metres long, and the tunnel is six metres wide. It is suitable for both classic and freestyle skiing. These dimensions give a clear idea of the lap and the available skiing styles, without requiring natural snowfall.

Varasvuoren mäkikeskus has five A-class ski jumping hills covered with plastic mats: K2, K8, K15, K29 and K58. The centre is one of Finland’s regional ski jumping centres; the mats allow training almost year-round. A separate activity is the Helmi MTB mountain bike trail network. It opened on 21 May 2022. The first phase included a challenging 6 km route, an easier 3 km route and a short track about 300 m long.
