The Mustijoki River flows through the centre of Pornainen, placing a strong emphasis on water and nature. The canoe route, rapids and outdoor trails appeal to travellers who enjoy spending time outside. Churches, Lahan Manor and the local history museum add cultural history to the picture. You can get to know Pornainen according to your interests, whether through the river, active experiences or historic sites.

Canoe route and rapids

The canoe route on the Mustijoki River runs through Pornainen and is about 65 kilometres long in total. There are several sections of varying lengths for day trips. The total distance is therefore different from the length of an individual day-trip section. More than 20 rapids lie along the route, around seven of which can be navigated by experienced paddlers. Whether a section is suitable for paddling also depends on water conditions.

The Mustijoki Rapids Tour includes nine rapids in Pornainen. Lahankoski is a series of rapids: over a stretch of about 200 metres, the Mustijoki drops by more than ten metres in total. From the impressive Halkiankoski to the idyllic Itälänkoski, every rapid offers year-round opportunities for photo stops and experiences.

Nature and outdoor activities

The Kotojärvi recreation area includes a fitness trail, fitness stairs, a network of trails, outdoor fitness equipment and an accessible nature trail. It also has a shelter, two toilets, a swimming beach, a children's playground, a beach volleyball court and a mountain biking trail. The range of facilities covers everything from exercise on land to beach and play activities; check the facility information before your trip.

Hyötinmäki has mountain biking trails for different skill levels; near the church village, there is a beginner-friendly nine-hole disc golf course with two layouts. These activities offer two different criteria to help you choose: skill level for cycling and the specific course format for disc golf. Check conditions on the mountain biking trails before your ride, as they may change.

Two specific routes help you find your way: in Laha, a picturesque nature trail begins beside the bridge at the rapids and follows the river downstream; a wide outdoor trail leads to Karjakoski, where there is a small fire pit on the riverbank.

Churches and local history

The granite church in Kirveskoski was completed in 1924 and designed by Ilmari Launis. At Pornainen Church, the older of the two bells dates from 1731. These two dates refer to different objects and historical points of reference: a church building and a bell. Lahan Manor is one of the most significant cultural heritage sites in Pornainen.

The Pornainen local history museum preserves cultural and ecclesiastical objects, including items from the time of the first and second churches. It is temporarily closed; check whether its status has changed before planning a visit.
