Utajärvi is best explored through its cultural sites and the geological history of the landscape. In the church village, the cultural trail connects historic sites along a walking route. Those more interested in rocks and landscape development will find different points of interest at Kivipuisto and in the exhibitions at Torimakasiini. You can shape your time in Utajärvi around your interest in local history, geology or nature.

The Cultural Trail and the History of the Church Village

The cultural trail leads to cultural and historical sites in the church village, which visitors can explore on foot. One of the area's landmark buildings is Utajärvi Church, completed in 1762, with seating for 320. Next to the church are a war cemetery and several memorials. The memorial to those who died in Karelia is made of red granite and was erected in 1958.

The vicarage grounds also tell of different eras. They have been inhabited since the 17th century. The oldest parts of the present main building date from 1763; other parts were built in the 1890s and the 1950s. Utajärvi railway station was completed in 1927 and classified as a regionally significant cultural-historical site. These places offer several points of connection to the church village’s history, without requiring a focus on any one period.

Local Heritage Museum and Exhibitions

The local heritage museum is located next to the church in a former granary. It has around 300 catalogued objects. Among its notable items is a rapids boat built based on a model from the early 20th century. The boat is kept in a shelter on the museum grounds. Check the opening arrangements before your visit: the museum is open during the summer Kotiseutuviikko, and otherwise can be visited by appointment.

On the ground floor of Torimakasiini at Vanhatie 8, you will find a seasonal café and an information point; the exhibition rooms are upstairs. The exhibition “Utajärven aikajana” tells the story of the area from the land rising out of the sea to recent events. “Aikamatka” focuses on the formation of the landscape of the UNESCO Global Geopark Rokua: from the early stages of bedrock development through the last Ice Age and the formation of ridges and dunes, to the spread of human settlement and post-Ice Age organisms. The two exhibitions therefore focus on different periods.

Rocks, Views and Activities

Kivipuisto illustrates the development of the Finnish bedrock with more than 50 large rock samples. The oldest stone there is 3.5-billion-year-old Siurua gneiss, considered the oldest rock in the bedrock of the European Union. Those interested in the composition and long development of the bedrock will find a different perspective here than in the local history collections. Kutukukkula is a lookout point near the centre, offering views of the Utajärvi landscape.

For an active break, Siiransaari near the centre has an 18-hole disc golf course in wooded, hilly terrain. The municipality offers year-round opportunities to spend time in nature, as well as good routes for hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing. At Kurimo, by the Kurimonkoski rapids, nature experiences go hand in hand with the history of a former, once-thriving ironworks community. Sotkakosken möljä is a surviving stone embankment in the river behind Sotka cemetery. It can be reached via a path leading to a steep riverbank.

Other memorial sites in the church village include the Roomaripatsas in the old market square, depicting the occupation of a log driver or ferryman, and Veteraanikivi. This memorial stone, completed in 1991, stands in Veteraanipuisto opposite the library at Postilanoja. Together, the cultural trail, exhibitions, rock samples and nature experiences offer different ways to discover Utajärvi according to your interests.
