Haapavesi: Culture, Nature and Active Experiences
Accommodation in Haapavesi
Haapavesi offers different ways to explore cultural history and nature: you can learn about the history of the vicarage and school, plan some birdwatching, or explore trails on foot or by bike. There are also several different options for active days. Which ones interest you most can help shape your stay.
Cultural history and local collections
Paakkila is an old vicarage in Haapavesi. The building was constructed in 1787; the house and its grounds are part of an historically significant vicarage culture. The property also includes a garden with a waterfront park and a path along the shore. The garden is open to visitors at all times. Its history also goes back a long way: the garden and cookery school began operating in 1893 and were the first of their kind in Finland.
Two museums with different areas of focus offer further insights. The Haapavesi School Museum is housed in the building of the first rural primary school in northern Finland. Exhibits at the Myyrilä Museum range from long Haapavesi skis and kantele instruments from Pasi Jääskeläinen’s workshop to a 1950s kitchen. Also on display are medical instruments belonging to district doctor Viranko, Onnela’s room, and a room dedicated to wartime history.
Haapavesi’s bell tower and Rapin karjamaja are also part of the area’s earlier architectural and local history. Built in 1751, the bell tower is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the region and is closely connected to the history of Haapavesi Church. Rapin karjamaja, in turn, represents a vanishing farming culture. It is one of the best-preserved of Haapavesi’s approximately 200 livestock huts and is among the sites of cultural and historical significance in Pohjois-Pohjanmaa. A skier statue commemorates Haapavesi’s tradition as a home of skiers and ski makers.
Music is also part of the cultural offering: the Haapavesi Folk Music Festival features folk music, world music, classical music, jazz and pop. Those interested in different genres will find a broad range brought together in one festival.
Natural attractions and outdoor trails
Ainalin lintujärvi is one of Finland’s most important bird lakes. Rare bird species can also be spotted there during the spring and autumn migrations. The Huikarin birdwatching tower stands on the shore of Kirkkojärvi; a beach and a boat launch are nearby. These natural attractions appeal to different interests: birdwatching by the lake or a visit to the observation tower and its nearby facilities.
For a hike, the Korkattivuori nature trail offers a clearly defined loop. Blue ribbons mark the route, which takes about 30 to 60 minutes to walk. Korkattivuori rises to 186.6 metres above sea level. At Haralampi, a maintained boardwalk runs around the pond. You can choose between a marked nature trail and a boardwalk route.
Active days at Lumimaa
The Lumimaa recreation area, close to the town centre, offers activities for different seasons. It has a toboggan run and an illuminated ski trail about 3 kilometres long. In summer, running steps, an obstacle course and fitness equipment add to the options. Cyclists can use a mountain bike trail with banked turns, stone drops, dirt mounds, slalom rings, a wooden ramp, jumps, downhill steps and climbing obstacles. There is also a rest area along the trail, which is suitable for all age groups.
Lumimaa also has a 280-metre XC trail. Its shorter length distinguishes it from the longer mountain bike trail. Kylpyläsaari is also worth a visit for families: it has a child-friendly beach.
