Gerå on the Kattegat: Beach, Nature Trails and History

On the Kattegat, Gerå combines coastal landscapes, nature observation and trails marked by traces of history. Gerå Strand is located 2 km east of Gerå on the Kattegat and within the Aså-Gerå Wildlife Reserve. From Gerå, Gerå Strand can be reached via Strandgårdsvej. This gives you a destination where you can tailor your stay to different interests: beaches and birdlife, short or longer hikes, as well as maritime and historical impressions.

Beach Meadows and River Landscape

The beach meadows of Asaa and Geraa were designated as a wildlife reserve in 2001. They are a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, especially birdwatchers, who can observe many birds of prey and wading birds there. The Aså-Gerå Wildlife Reserve extends from the southern part of Gerå to the southeastern part of Aså. The Gerå River also shapes the landscape: along long stretches, it has retained its natural, meandering course.

Finding Your Way at Gerå Strand

In the immediate vicinity of Gerå, the car park on Strandgårdsvej has benches and information boards about birdlife in the wildlife reserve. A 350-metre-long path leads from the car park to Gerå Strand through varied natural surroundings. Motor vehicles are not permitted in the Aså-Gerå Wildlife Reserve. These clear reference points make the coastal area easy to navigate without reducing its natural surroundings to a single use.

Three Hiking Trails with Different Destinations

Near Geraa and Melholt, there are three hiking trails measuring 7.6 km, 4.7 km and 3.7 km. All three hiking trails begin in Geraa at the Sorensminde farm. The different distances help you assess the scope of a hike in advance and decide on the focus of the day. The red route follows the Gerå River at several points. The yellow route leads to the long Borgmestermolen pier, from where there is a wide view across the coastal bird protection area and the Kattegat.

The green route passes through the maritime foreland to the Kattegat. It then continues north along the old Kongevej road from Hals to Frederikshavn and passes Hundeskoven. Its route also includes a stretch of coast where numerous suicide torpedoes and a large amount of anti-aircraft equipment were found at the end of the Second World War. The trails therefore differ not only in length, but also in their riverbanks, pier, foreland, woodland and historical sites.

Houses and Traces of the Past

Geraa itself also has a historical accent: Geraa has several well-preserved 18th-century houses. Sorensminde is more than 400 years old and is also the starting point for all three hiking trails. The combination of old houses, the Sorensminde farm and the old Kongevej road gives exploration an additional dimension in time alongside nature and the coast.
