Jakobstad: Wooden House District, Harbor and Nature
Accommodation in Jakobstad
Jakobstad combines nature experiences by the water with a rich historical heritage. When planning your trip, you can choose a clear theme: Fäboda is all about hiking trails, rocks and nature experiences; in the city, wooden house districts, museums and harbor settings offer insights into Jakobstad’s history and seafaring heritage.
Hiking and Nature in Fäboda
The Fäboda hiking trail network is about 40 km long in total and also includes shorter routes. This lets you choose between a longer route and a shorter hike when planning your day, without mistaking the approximate total length of the trail network for a single route. The hiking trail can also be used for mountain biking. The terrain in the forests of Fäboda is also suitable for cross-country skiing.
An accessible nature trail in Fäboda consists of two sections: the first is 170 m long, and the second is about 600 m. A nature trail for children features nature-themed activities, animal sculptures and a balance course. These different options give families and active travelers a concrete sense of the kinds of nature experiences they can seek out in Fäboda.
The landscape itself also shapes your stay: in Fäboda, you can admire smooth rocks, enjoy the sea air and watch the sunset from the shore. The Skolträdgården Botanical Garden covers about 1.35 hectares. From early May until late autumn, it displays plants in a variety of shapes and colors, offering a different kind of nature experience from the trails and shoreline of Fäboda.
Wooden House Districts and Maritime History
Skata is Finland’s largest contiguous wooden house district, comprising 40 blocks. The district has been protected since 1982 and has largely retained its original character. The best way to explore Skata is on foot. The size of the district and its preserved character make it a destination in its own right for anyone interested in historic townscapes.
The Malm House offers insights into Jakobstad’s local history and seafaring heritage; two rooms are dedicated to the city’s history. Exhibitions feature period rooms from the late 19th century, as well as ship portraits and ship models. If you would like to look beyond the city’s history and explore Arctic themes, Nanoq is a museum devoted to them: it opened in June 1991 as Finland’s first Arctic museum. Visitors can learn about Arctic cultures, history and nature, and hear stories about famous expeditions to the North and South Poles. One admission ticket gives access to the main building and the open-air museum.
The Strengberg Tobacco Museum traces the history of the tobacco factory in Jakobstad, from its beginnings as a small spinning mill to its development into Finland’s largest tobacco producer at the start of the 20th century. At the Old Harbor, traditional red-painted boathouses tell the story of the harbor area. Jakobstad thus offers several ways to explore the past: city history, seafaring, industry and Arctic exploration.
Gardens, Harbor and Your Stay
The Aspegren Garden is one of Finland’s oldest rectory gardens and is an exceptionally well-preserved garden setting in Scandinavia. In the school garden, ramps connect the different areas and make it easier to move freely around the park. Its permanent outdoor stage was built in 1992 and is used for major festivals in Jakobstad, including Jakobs Dagar. Various events are held at Rosenlund; guided tours are available there by prior booking.
The Old Harbor is a recreational area with a beach, forest and a small marina. A large playground adds to what it offers. The harbor and Fäboda therefore appeal to different interests: here, beaches, forest and play areas complement Fäboda’s trail network, rocks and nature experiences.
Jakobstad has rail, harbor and airport connections serving residents and businesses. If you would like to compare different places for your trip, you can also find Kristinestad, Lappfjärd, Nykarleby, Ylihärmä, Iskmo, Eugmo and Nordanå.
