Lappfjärd can be explored through three specific themes: church architecture and Christmas customs, the river landscape of Lappfjärds å, and the annual Lappfjärdsdagen. Visitors who want to plan their stay around a particular interest will find a range of ways to connect with the area—from architecture and local history to nature watching and a seasonal event.

Church, Christmas Crosses and Language

Lappfjärd Church was inaugurated in 1852 and designed by architect Ernst B. Lohrmann. It offers seating for up to 3,000 people. It is used as a summer church from May to September. If you wish to visit the church, it is best to check in advance whether a visit is possible on your chosen date.

At Christmas, visitors can see wooden Christmas crosses at many farms. They are attached to flagpoles or to the gable ends of outbuildings. Their black framework is shaped like a tilted square. Since 1947, the Lappfjärds folkhögskola has held annual courses in making these crosses.

Lappfjärd is bilingual: Finnish and Swedish are spoken in the town. The local Swedish-language identity includes the “laffjös” dialect. Along with building history and festive customs, this linguistic character offers another specific way to connect with the town.

Lappfjärds å and the River Landscape

The Lappfjärds å is home to 25 fish species, including a local grayling population and healthy populations of sea trout and brown trout. In winter, the open rapids are ideal for following otter tracks and observing overwintering dippers. The birds dive into the steaming water to search for caddisfly larvae. These observations are specific to winter and give the river landscape a different focus from the fish populations described above.

One specific riverside spot is Stenparken, at Södra Lappfjärdsvägen 19. In addition to the river, there are opportunities for grilling and fishing there. Storholmen is a three-hectare island between rapids in the Pärus Fors area. The local scenery thus includes both specific waterside leisure activities and landscapes of islands and rapids.

Trails and Activities in the Surrounding Area

Lappfjärd’s recreational facilities include a lit ski trail or outdoor training path, as well as the Perus hiking trail. These offer different options: a lit route for training and a specifically named hiking trail.

Nearby is Bötombergen, about 9 km from the centre of Lappfjärd. There, visitors can ski, hike, mountain bike and swim. The ski centre has two slopes: a steeper run and one specifically designated as a family slope. If you are planning to ski, you can choose between these two described slopes; the other activities extend beyond winter sports. National Road 8, one of Finland’s most important highways, runs through Lappfjärd and offers another point of reference for locating the town.

Lappfjärdsdagen in August

Lappfjärdsdagen takes place on the first Saturday in August. It opens on Saturday with a large vehicle parade through the town. The event also features the Öykstock competition with flat-bottomed boats. These boats were once used on the Lappfjärds å and at its mouth. Each team entering the competition needs six people and an “öykå”. Traditional Klimpsoppa is also served at Lappfjärdsdagen, prepared by the local Martha Association. If you wish to plan your trip around the festival, check the date for the relevant year in advance.
