Vaasa: City History, Beaches and Trails
Accommodation in Vaasa
In Vaasa, beach visits, city history and active days can shape your stay. The city combines nine beaches with cycling routes and outdoor activity trails; museums each focus on the region’s history and different art forms. This lets you plan your stay around the interests that matter most to you.
City History and Art
The permanent exhibition “Vaasa 400” on the ground floor of the Ostrobothnian Museum tells the city’s 400-year history. The Museum of Old Vaasa has a local focus: it is located in Wasastjerna House, built in 1782. The Brage Open Air Museum presents a complete 19th-century farm, with buildings and interiors from Swedish-speaking Ostrobothnia. The three places offer different ways to explore history—from urban development and a historic home to rural architecture and everyday culture.
The art museums also offer different perspectives. The Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art presents changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Tikanoja Art Home hosts exhibitions of older art from Finland and abroad, as well as cultural history and collection exhibitions. The permanent exhibitions at Vaasa’s city museums also cover the history of the Vaasa region, as well as the nature and World Heritage of the Kvarken Archipelago. As the regional responsibility museum for Ostrobothnia, the city museums preserve, communicate and present the region’s science, art and history.
Another historic address is Villa Strömsö, built in 1852 and used as the setting for the television programme of the same name. A guided tour must be booked to see the interior; it lasts one hour. Check visitor arrangements before your trip. This is especially important if an indoor visit is a firm part of your plans.
Beaches, Cycling and Trails
Vaasa has nine beaches, all maintained by the city. They are accessible by car, on foot and by bicycle; public transport is available within a reasonable distance. Swimming conditions vary by season. The beaches therefore offer a distinct focus alongside the cultural programme, without beach time and museum visits requiring the same kind of stay.
Vaasa has almost 200 kilometres of cycling paths. Seven signposted main cycling routes follow cycling paths; signs and routes may be updated. A connected network of outdoor activity trails covers about 70 kilometres. These figures describe different route options: if you are planning a bike ride, you can use the main cycling routes as a guide; for outdoor activities, the connected trail network offers a separate point of reference. Check the current routes before setting off.
Public fire pits are free for residents and visitors to use. You must bring your own firewood and equipment. In Sundom, Vaasa, the ski slope and trails at Öjberget are frequently used in winter. In summer, they become hiking or jogging trails. This seasonal change makes Öjberget a specific example of how possible activities vary with the time of year; no current snow or operating conditions are implied.
Arrival and Getting Around
Vaasa railway station is in the city centre. Vaasa Airport is a ten-minute journey from the city centre; the actual travel time may vary depending on traffic. These two details help you plan your arrival without specifying a particular connection or mode of transport. When choosing a hotel, you can also consider whether you want to focus your stay on the city museums, beaches or trails.
