Most of the Korsholm archipelago belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site; 70 percent of the World Heritage area lies in Korsholm. The Stundars Open-Air Museum in the village of Solf offers another way to explore the municipality.

Open-Air Museum, Crafts and Crater History

Stundars is a large open-air museum in the village of Solf in Korsholm municipality. It presents the lives of farming communities, craftspeople and lower social classes in the Swedish-speaking countryside between Oravais in the north and Pörtom in the south from 1870 to 1920. Alongside everyday farming life, it also focuses on crafts and social conditions. Stundars also serves as a centre for crafts and as an example of the preservation of traditional buildings. During the summer season, various activities and guided tours are offered daily; participation is included in the admission price. As the seasonal programme may change, check the latest dates before your visit.

Meteoria offers a geological focus: the centre explores the history of the Söderfjärden impact crater and was built in the centre of the crater.

Trails of Varying Lengths

The Stundars hiking trail starts at the open-air museum. It is 6.6 kilometres long and runs from Stundars to Söderfjärden, to the village of Munsmo and back to Stundars. At 900 metres, the Smedsby Adventure Trail is considerably shorter. The trail follows the recreational path and passes a playground, an outdoor fitness area and a pond. Its seven checkpoints can be visited year-round. Along the route, you can also taste cherries and apples and enjoy the scent of rhododendrons.

Smedsby Orienteering offers a different distance: the orienteering course is just over three kilometres long and starts and finishes at Elly Sigfrids torg. It can be used on foot, by bicycle, with a stroller or in a wheelchair. The Hästhagens-Äppeldalens recreational path is 1.2 kilometres long, connects Hästhagen, Olavs lekpark, Körsbärsdalen, Äppeldalen and Rhododendronparken, and is maintained in winter. The public can pick and eat apples in Äppeldalen. Blue markings and signs provide guidance around the Bodvattnet rundt loop trail.

Planning for the Archipelago and Trails

The landscape of Kvarken was shaped by the last Ice Age. Rapid land uplift creates new shallows and unusual moraine ridges, forming a labyrinthine landscape. From the Saltkaret observation tower, you can look out over the rocky archipelago, formed by De Geer moraines.

The Replot Bridge is also a prominent landmark for finding your way around the municipality: it leads to Replot and Björköby, is 1,045 metres long and is Finland’s longest bridge. It was completed in 1997. If you are planning a longer cycling trip, there is a suggested route through Korsholm covering a total of 180 to 200 kilometres, with daily stages of 50 to 70 kilometres. It runs along paved and gravel roads; route conditions may change. Check them before planning your trip.

Freshly smoked perch and herring are part of the local food culture and are considered delicacies in Korsholm; the latter are also called böckling. What individual fishers offer may vary by season.
