Discover Piece: Kociewie Houses and Church

Those wishing to plan a trip around Kociewie timber architecture and religious architecture will find tangible historical points of interest in Piece. The village is on National Road 22, about 2 km west of the village of Kaliska. Notable sights include a thatched Kociewie porch house, a wooden house from the 19th century, and the Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Kociewie Houses in Piece

A thatched Kociewie porch-house cottage in Piece dates from 1885. A wooden Kociewie house is located at 14 6 Marca Street, on the corner of Okrężna Street. It dates from the 19th century and is listed in the Pomeranian Voivodeship monument register under number 875. These two dates give the village’s appearance a historical context without requiring an extensive walking tour.

The house’s location on a street corner is also a useful landmark in the village: the listed wooden cottage stands at the intersection of Okrężna and 6 Marca. Those interested in regional architectural styles can connect this part of the village with Piece’s other wooden architecture. The Kociewie heritage distinguishes this historical focus from a trip centred mainly on the coast, beach, or harbour.

The Church and the Village’s History

The Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was designed in the Neo-Baroque style. The architect Franz Kunst also supervised its construction. Work began on 16 July 1911 on Czubnica Hill and was completed in 1914. The church was therefore built between 1911 and 1914. Its striking tower is a defining feature of the building.

The furnishings at the time included a thirteen-stop Walcker organ. The parish was established on 16 December 1922 by the then Bishop of Chełmno, Augustyn Rosentreter. These dates tell different parts of the church’s history: the beginning and completion of construction, the furnishings at the time, and the later establishment of the parish. The church and rectory at 3 Kościelna Street are part of the protected religious complex listed under number 1909. The church itself is also listed in the Pomeranian Voivodeship monument register under this number.

The Izydora Gulgowski Trail and Finding Your Way Around

The route of the Izydora Gulgowski Trail also connects Piece with a wider area: in 1997, it was rerouted to run directly from Kaliska to Piece and then to the Gulgowski House in Iwiczno. In the Piece area, the trail follows Działkowa Street to National Road 22, then continues along unpaved Okrężna Street, 6 Marca Street, and Szkolna Street in the direction of Iwiczno.

At kilometre 2.5 on 6 Marca Street is a chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. Together with the wooden cottage at the corner of Okrężna and 6 Marca, it provides two clear landmarks along this section of the route.

Another dated event was the 28th Kociewsko-Borowiacki Cycling Tour on 9 August 2025. It was organised by the KOCIEWIE Local Tourist Organisation; co-organisers included the Municipality of Kaliska. The event is a historical reference to cycling in the region, not an indication of an upcoming event date.
