Raugi offers two distinct themes for planning a trip: protected natural areas and maritime navigation history. Its natural features range from geological formations to protected habitats; the leading lights of Vahtraste add a historical nautical-chart connection. You can therefore consider nature and maritime history as separate areas of interest.

Rannaniidi: geology and protected habitats

Raugi is part of the Rannaniidi Natura area and lies within the Rannaniidi loodusala Natura area (EE0040457). The Rannaniidi Natura area includes five larger alvars and numerous smaller ones. This range of sizes gives the natural area a distinct geological focus. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a theme that differs from the protected habitats.

Raugi is also part of the Rannaniidi hoiuala protected area. It protects primary coastal ridges, sea-facing cliffs, juniper scrub, alvars, springs and spring fens. The protected features therefore range from coastal landforms and shrubs to water-dependent habitats. Nature enthusiasts can view geological formations and different habitat types as distinct ways of exploring the region. A wooded meadow has also been restored in Raugi. It adds the aspect of restoration to the protection of coastal landforms and wetlands.

A road runs through the Rannaniidi natural area and is considered the main route used by visitors. It is a clear reference point for finding your way around the area; the protected habitats also provide a broad thematic framework for exploring nature.

Peedu pangad and its immediate surroundings are a protected local natural feature. While the information about the Rannaniidi area covers different habitat types, the focus here is on a named natural feature and its surroundings. This distinguishes a local conservation feature from the description of a larger natural area.

Maritime history and special travel interests

Raugi’s maritime history is reflected in the leading lights of Vahtraste. They were built in 1885 and are named “Raugi tuleliin” on nautical charts. Their construction date and nautical-chart name give visitors interested in seafaring and coastal navigation a concrete historical reference.

The private EEMU airfield offers another perspective on Raugi. It is located in Raugi and welcomes private pilots and their aircraft; the grass runway is 600 metres long. This specifies the airfield’s private status, as well as the runway’s length and surface. Since operating arrangements may change, you should check in advance if you are planning to arrive.

In the context of the host municipality of Muhu, Muhu Veinitalu in Vahtraste offers wine tastings and tours about winemaking and the history of Estonian wine. The activities differ in focus: tastings centre on the wine, while the tours also cover winemaking and wine history.
