Culture and History

Gut Salzau is connected to the villages of Fargau and Pratjau. Its large manor house was built between 1881 and 1884 and is considered a state cultural center. Salzau Manor is also considered the birthplace of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. This festival encompasses cultural events in music and art, readings, and cultural exchange.

Landscape

An extensive protected landscape area with forests, meadows, and fields forms part of the landscape of Fargau-Pratjau. Deciduous forest predominates around Lake Selent; there are also many grassland areas and a smaller proportion of arable land.

The protected landscape area on Lake Selent is intended to preserve ecologically significant natural habitat structures and functions. The northern shore of Lake Selent has been protected since 1978. The designation of the protected landscape area is “Lake Selent with the lowlands between Fargau and Pratjau and the surrounding area.”

Shoreline and Water

The municipality’s protected landscape area is suitable for extended walks. There is access to the lake and small bathing areas at four northwestern sections of the shore of Lake Selent. Some sections of the shore are used for leisure activities, including access to jetties and a sunbathing lawn. Five unguarded bathing areas are spread around Lake Selent.

Many waterfowl can be observed around Lake Selent all year round.

Nature Conservation

In the protected areas of Holstein Switzerland, visitors are asked to stay on designated paths, keep dogs on a leash to protect wildlife, and take their rubbish with them.
