Lake Großer Plöner See: Hotels and Accommodation

Lake Großer Plöner See is located in the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. It is Schleswig-Holstein’s largest, deepest and most island-rich lake: its surface area is approximately 30 km², its depth reaches up to 58 metres, and numerous islands are scattered across the lake.

Water and trails

You can swim at 15 bathing spots; sailing, canoeing, walking around the lake and fishing are also possible. Fish species found here include eel, perch, bream, pike, zander and rudd.

The 37 km-long Plön Lake Tour circles the lake. There are also 15 signposted day tours that follow mostly quiet roads and scenic paths to picnic areas, attractions, lakeside areas and restaurants.

The lake is a sailing area free of motorboats, with almost 30 islands. Boat rentals offer canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and pedal boats; official diving entry points are available in Plön Bay and Bosau Bay.

When using the lake, you may not enter marked nature reserves or the islands, must keep a distance of 50 to 70 metres from protected areas, and may not paddle through shallow breeding and resting areas.

Places in the surrounding area

Plön, Bosau and Dersau lie around the lake and are considered picturesque places associated with culture, history and nature. Bischofswarder, Ziegen Warder, Zappen Warder and Tempel are located in the immediate surrounding area.

Nature and wildlife observation

The lake is an important breeding ground for waterfowl and lies on a significant migration route for birds from the north. Greylag geese, coots, great crested grebes and white-tailed eagles have been recorded in the area; during the spring moult, large groups of ducks and diving birds gather there.

Culture in the wider surrounding area

The surrounding area is home to the Herb Museum and Riemannstein. In the wider regional area, there are the state stud farm and Neumünster Kreuzkirche.
