Helmstorf: Hotels and Accommodation

Helmstorf features a hilly landscape in East Holstein with terminal moraines, steeply incised wooded ravines, beech forests with spring flora and extensive agricultural land. From parts of the municipality, views extend to the Kossautal nature reserve, the Bungsberg and the Baltic Sea.

Trails

Hiking along the old network of paths offers views of preserved hedgerows, hilly terminal moraine terrain, mature solitary trees, marl pits and megalithic tombs. A newer cycle path runs along the L178, connecting the municipality of Helmstorf with Lütjenburg and the Bungsberg region.

Culture and History

Helmstorf's cultural heritage features include the Old School dating from 1821 in Kühren, which received an award for monument preservation in 2006, the earth-sheltered potato barn at Meierhof Wetterade, and the Helmstorf estate complex with its manor house, large barns and outbuildings.

The hydroelectric power station of Helmstorf Estate has been in operation since 1895. Initially, it supplied the estate and later Lütjenburg with electricity; after receiving a new generator in the 1990s, it remains in operation.
