In summer, Nettelsee is characterised by a lake surrounded by hills and meadows. The municipal area includes Nettelsee and Holzsee lakes, the Nettelau River and smaller floodplain areas. The Nettelau flows from Holzsee and Nettelsee near Gut Nettelau. As part of the A21 project, the river is being restored to a more natural state; the measures are intended to protect otters and moor frogs.

Water and Paths

The landscape can also be explored via its paths. Kielerkamper Weg is a rare hedgerow lane, with hedges running along both sides. A described hike along the Nettelau to Holzsee is approximately 6 kilometres long and takes around two hours. One section of the route near Holzsee is closed to motor vehicles but remains open to pedestrians and cyclists.

In the Holstein Switzerland tourism region, there are 27 signposted circular hiking trails and many unmarked paths through hills, forests, meadows and lake shores lined with reeds. Public transport makes it easier to reach the starting and ending points of circular hikes there.

History and Culture

Gut Nettelau was established in 1795 as a Meierhof, or tenant farm, belonging to Gut Depenau. The former Depenau narrow-gauge railway station is also part of the area's history: it has been preserved with its exterior almost unchanged and stands on the old railway embankment.

The chapel in Nettelsee was completed in early summer 1965. It was intended as a cemetery chapel as well as a space for church services and meetings. It was financed through the chapel construction programme of the former Evangelical Lutheran Church of Schleswig-Holstein. Since its completion, the chapel has continued to provide space for community and quiet reflection. It is located at Kirchweg 17, 24250 Nettelsee.
