Stakendorf: Hotels and Accommodations
Stakendorf is located on the Baltic Sea coast at the eastern edge of the Probstei region. The village has largely preserved its rural structure. Restored historic buildings, numerous ponds, and an extensive tree population shape the villagescape. Stakendorf also has a free natural bathing beach that directly adjoins Schönberger Strand.
History
Peter Plett was Stakendorf’s village schoolteacher from 1808 until his early retirement in 1820. Even before Edward Jenner, Peter Plett discovered and administered the smallpox vaccination. A hiking route through Stakendorf passes impressive farmhouses and a village pond with a memorial to those killed in the world wars.
Cycling and Hiking Trails
Kilometers of paved, well-signposted cycling and hiking trails run through the Probstei region. They pass through fields and meadows lined with hedgerows and through villages, as well as past historic monuments, beaches, and inland lakes. In the Probstei, hiking trails run along hedgerows, through salt marshes and nature reserves, and onward to inland lakes.
The hiking trails have barely noticeable changes in elevation and are considered suitable for practically everyone. One hiking route reaches the Schmoel nature reserve after about two kilometers and reveals the contrast between the historic natural coast and modern coastal protection.
Nature
The nearby Strandseelandschaft nature reserve near Schmoel provides a habitat for many characteristic bird species and can be reached by bicycle from Stakendorf. Nearby coastal lakes with extensive reed belts offer many bird species places to rest and nest. Near Schmoel, beach ridges formed by waves pushing up stones are home to salt-tolerant plants such as sea kale, sea rocket, and glasswort.
Local Offerings
Stakendorf has an organic farm shop offering meat, sausages, potatoes, vegetables, fruit, eggs, and organic foods, as well as bread rolls from the village bakery. From May to September, a garden café serves waffles, including a vegan version.
