Großenwiehe: Hotels and Accommodations

Several architectural and furnishing details of St. Lawrence Church in Großenwiehe date from the 12th to the 18th century. The church was probably built as a fieldstone church between 1170 and 1190; the tower and vestibule were added in 1747.

Culture and History

The vestibule contains an old oak offering box with a triple wrought-iron lock. It formerly served the congregation as a safe and savings bank. The former pew reserved for Christina Friedebeck also stands in the vestibule. In the altar area, there is a baptismal font with a carved lid dating from 1794, while the pulpit dates from 1630.

Another attraction of St. Lawrence Church is the “Madonna with Jesus” from the 14th century. The former church doors were historically assigned different roles, including a death door and a women’s door. The two pairs of altar lights also belong to different periods: they date from the 15th and 18th centuries.

Location and Routes

Großenwiehe is located about 12 km southwest of Flensburg in the Schleswig Geest. State Road 12 connects the town toward North Frisia and the North Sea; the B 200 provides a connection toward Flensburg. The motorway is approximately 15 minutes by car from Großenwiehe.
