Culture

St. Matthew’s Church stands on a hill on the northern edge of Medelby. Its main structure was built approximately between 1150 and 1200 from unworked fieldstones. The elevated Romanesque windows give the building a fortified character; the church may have served as a place of refuge for local residents.

Medelby Church is classified as a cultural monument.

Nature

The “Eichenkratt und Kiesgrube südlich Böxlund” nature reserve is partly located in Medelby. The “Eichenwälder der Böxlunder Geest” FFH area covers 84 hectares of small-scale farm woodlands dominated by oak trees on Saalian moraine hills west of Flensburg.

Cycling is possible around Medelby. Camping Mitte in Medelby is open year-round. The site offers spacious pitches, holiday apartments and mobile homes. It also includes a playground, a small indoor swimming pool and a multipurpose hall with a table tennis table.

Geographical Location

The Schafflund administrative district lies between Flensburg and the Danish border. It has numerous cycling and hiking trails with scenic resting places. Its proximity to Denmark is reflected in cross-border cultural and linguistic connections as well as in everyday life.

The location of the Schafflund administrative district is described as being approximately 30 minutes by car from the North Sea and approximately 20 minutes by car from the Baltic Sea. Historic churches, traditional thatched-roof houses and farm shops are among the characteristics of the Schafflund administrative district.
