Coastal Trails and Nature in BÃ¥stad

In BÃ¥stad, coastal trails, woodland landscapes and a clearly recognisable local history come together. If you would like to combine your stay with activities in nature, several documented experiences begin directly in or near the town. Kustslingan is a hiking trail that runs close to the sea around the eastern part of BÃ¥stad. For a cycling tour, Buktenleden is an option: this 20-kilometre coastal mountain-biking trail runs between BÃ¥stad and Laholm. Axeltorpsslingan begins in BÃ¥stad, adding to the choice of trails whose starting point is in the town.

South of Båstad lies the Axelstorps skogar nature reserve on the north-western slope of Hallandsåsen. It comprises beech forest as well as beautiful stream ravines. Its location on Hallandsåsen complements the proximity to the sea with a woodland and ravine landscape. This landscape forms a distinct natural area alongside the coastal trails and particularly appeals to travellers who want to take both the sea and woodland landscape into account when choosing where to stay.

Historic Town Centre and Cultural Experiences

Båstad’s older urban structure is concentrated along Agardhsgatan, the square, Köpmansgatan and the harbour. It consists predominantly of buildings from the 19th century; buildings from the 18th century are also represented. Mariakyrkan was built in the mid-15th century and bears witness to Båstad’s prosperity during the lucrative herring fishery of the 15th and 16th centuries. Those walking through the town can place these traces of its history from different periods within a coherent local setting, without a single theme having to define the entire stay.

A special collection can be found at the Sveriges Tennismuseum in Båstad. It contains objects and documents covering the entire history of tennis in Sweden. The museum’s main task is to document Swedish tennis history and make it accessible to the public. Handwoven rugs and tapestries are produced at the studio of Märta Måås-Fjetterström. In addition, Lilla konstslingan leads through the centre of Båstad as a public art trail. A cultural walking route runs through and around Båstad, from the old district to Malenskogen. The cultural spectrum thus ranges from public art and local history to sports history and the production of handwoven rugs and tapestries.

The Båstad Visitor Center & Shop is located in Båstad harbour and can be visited during the summer season. At other times of year, tourist information is available online and at an unmanned Visitor Center. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore distinguish between locations associated with coastal trails, the nature reserve, the harbour or the older urban structure, without reducing Båstad’s character to just one aspect.
