Fleninge Gästgiveri is the only surviving older inn building in Helsingborg Municipality. Together with an early motel and Romanesque church remains, it gives Fleninge a historically shaped character. If you are looking for accommodation, you can also choose how to place the area in context based on the history you would like to accompany your stay: inn and transport history, older municipal buildings or a nature theme.

Inn, roads and travel tradition

Fleninge’s first inn was built in the 17th century; the area’s tradition as a road junction also dates back to that century. The inn and its connection to transport therefore belong to an early chapter in the area’s history. Two distinct road connections are noted for the 20th century: until 1964, Västkustvägen ran through Fleninge in the direction of Gothenburg; nearby, Riksväg 2 also ran in the direction of Stockholm. One road therefore passed through the area, while the other ran nearby—a distinction that precisely captures their respective historical connections.

Motel history and motorised architecture

Fleninge motell opened in 1954 and was Sweden’s first motel at the time. It is an early example of architecture adapted to motorised traffic. Compared with the first inn, from the 17th century, the motel represents a different chapter in the history of travel. Together, the two buildings offer insight into the development of the hospitality industry and show how Fleninge’s connection to transport is reflected in architecture across different eras.

Buildings between parish and church

The so-called Donationshuset dates from the 1850s. At the time, it was the parish poorhouse; it was later used as a schoolhouse and is now a local history museum. The building’s changing roles connect social welfare and education with its present-day use as a museum. For travellers interested in community life, the history of this building offers a different perspective from the history of roads and inns.

Fleninge kyrka reaches far back in time: its oldest parts date from the 12th century. Remains of a Romanesque church with a nave, chancel and apse have been preserved. These three terms refer to different parts of the church building and make its surviving basic layout clear. Together with Donationshuset, they reveal a contrast in time and function: the church preserves Romanesque building elements, while the building from the 1850s took on different roles over time.

A wetland of high natural value

Another perspective can be found west of the Flöjen wetland: right by the railway is a man-made wetland covering just under one hectare. Its natural value is rated very high, Class 2, due to its hydrological, zoological and botanical qualities. The assessment therefore encompasses water conditions, wildlife and plant life. As a way of understanding Fleninge, this area complements its architectural and transport history with a natural history aspect, without equating the individual places or buildings.
