Södra Mellby church village lies on a rise in the rolling cultural landscape south of Kivik. This setting offers a specific landscape context when choosing a place to stay; its themes range from religious furnishings and agricultural history to a baking tradition maintained over generations. If you include Mellby in your search, you can consider the landscape, historic buildings and food culture as distinct interests, rather than assuming that one theme defines your entire stay.

A church with layers of history

Södra Mellby Church was completed in 1887. The church’s baptismal font is made of dark limestone and was probably carved in a workshop on Gotland in the early 13th century. The pulpit is a Renaissance work. The medieval predecessor church was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of seafarers, and was visible from the sea as a landmark. The Baroque altarpiece dates from 1669. An exhibition in the south transept features models of the old church, a chalice veil from 1793 and a chancel organ. The winding village road climbs to the church; old houses with plaster or timber façades preserve the character of the 19th century.

Windmill and agricultural history

Södra Mellby’s mölla is a Dutch-style windmill dating from 1858–1859 and an important record of the area’s agricultural history. The mill had separate grinding mechanisms for animal feed and bread grain, as well as a barley huller for producing pearl barley. It ceased operating toward the end of the 1940s; the local heritage association took over the mill afterward.

Another chapter is the hearse house: in 2024, traditional methods were used to restore it to a condition more closely reflecting its original state.

Mellbykavringen and getting there

Mellbykavringen bread adds a culinary dimension to these historic themes. It has been baked using the same traditional recipe for more than 100 years. First, the bakery scalds pure rye flour and leaves it overnight with sourdough starter. During baking, two loaves are placed on top of each other: an upper and a lower kavring. The next day, yeast, salt, syrup and more rye flour are added. The loaves are baked stacked on top of each other for two hours and then dried for a further 30 minutes. The bakery recommends serving the bread with herring and egg.
